  • villabadger would you have over £80K worth of subbie work going through your books? will you re-think how you do things? I certainly will be - there is no way they are ever getting a penny from me.

    Yep, if they ever catch up with me then I will be completely shafted. Unfortunately, I will have paid out between £150-200k on subbies this tax year as we don't have employees. They are all chippies so there won't be any exceptions. This is what is really annoying me, like you, I already pay a premium rate for 'qualified' guys so why should I pay a training tax?

    If you want to cheer yourself up, take a look at the 'About Us' section of their website - 2 years of accounts info - laughable!

    Come on CITB person give us your reasons for the following:

    1. Why do secretaries wages count towards the training levy for tradesmen?

    2. Why do surveyors (who already pay for training through RICS) wages count towards the training levy for tradesmen?

    3. Why do plumbers (who already pay for training through their membership association) wages count towards the training levy for tradesmen?

    4. Why do electricians (who already pay for training through their membership association) wages count towards the training levy for tradesmen?

    These are simple questions that all of us on here would like answered.

    Please stop hiding and give us a proper grown up answer.

    1. Why is the levy worked out on subbies and employees 'wages' - sometimes jobs can run at a loss or very little profit. A 1.5% levy can add a huge amount to a small businesses outgoings.

    2. WHy is the CITB not more open and honest with newly signed up businesses? why does nobody take the time to explain what the charges will be?

    3. How can this be a 'legal requirement' when not all business are signed up to it? how do you go about getting the money from businesses who refuse to pay (probably out of principle!)

    4. Why is it not more clear about 'labour only' subbies? when I got the form to fill in I had no correspondehnce with it and when I phoned I was told that you could not tell me what to put down and I shoudl just 'put down what I think'

    5. What value do you think that the CITB are inputting to Apprentices. Out Apprentice is now in his third year - can you tell me what you thinbk CITB has done for him/our company?

    It's all getting a bit confusing now, the CITB take firms who don't pay to Employment Tribunals to get a decision.

    What I don't understand is why the plumbing firm tried to prove that they were not a construction industry firm when surely all they had to do was quote from the offiicial Hansard records showing the Ministers saying that the legislation was changed to exclude plumbers.
    Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p

    I don't think anyone will be back to defend the citb after the strength of just a few of our opinions. Imagine how many other small business find this 'levy' appalling.

    I might be in a position where I need to employ say 50 subbies (I'm not, just using it as an example) why should it be my 'duty' to contribute to their training?

    Also, what happens on jobs where we loose money? I got hit for £20k from the rok fallout and had already paid out £15k for subbies wages. Where's the consideration for this? Kick the small man when he's down and sting him for tax on the cash he's already paid out - brilliant!!:mad:

    I think 'CITB' said he was an employer and had to pay the levy. I suggest that anyone who has time to contribute their work time to another organisation like this clearly cannot be an owner of a small business. If he was he would be more concerned with getting his cash in and paying the bills! I've always thought that it's easier to have a nice corporate role rather than having your own money and livelihood at stake.

  • Hi everyone

    Just to clarify, only certain companies can post on the forum and we've asked CiTB not to post again.

    We did ask them to answer the question about plumbers though and here's the reply:

    The simple response is that plumbers and electricians are out of scope of the Levy (and you can refer to SummitSkills with any questions about those sectors, in terms of training etc).

    I'd also strongly recommend that Life rings the levy and Grant help desk -- as per my original response. They are the experts and they have all the answers. It's what they're there for.
