  • You will not get any help for the childcare.. I am unsure whether you would get much help in form of CTC.. on current rates it would be around £40 a week but they are changing the tapering % from april so would be reduced.

Would it not make more financial sense for your partner to give up the self employment (3.5K for 32hrs a week is not much) and look after the children or for your partner to get an "employed" full time job?

  • £172 X 52 = £8,944

It makes no sense whatsoever for your partner to be earning £3,500 pa (£2.00 per hour!) whilst someone else looks after the children, much less expecting to claim a state subsidy towards it.

    Many thanks guys.
My partner is a private hire driver so on paper he earns very little where as in reality its not financially in our interests for him to stop work to mind 2 children!
Also I feel it is important for children to attend nursery for educational & social purposes.
It frustrates me that my take home pay is so significantly less than my top line salary!
Im afraid in todays society you are penalised for working hard & wanting to give your children the best start in life!

So, are you really saying he avoids tax by not declaring his real income? and then going onto say you feel you pay too much tax?

Welcome to the real world, where most of us pay our fair dues and bring up our children.

So on paper he earns £3500, but in reality he earns over £9K? (More than childcare costs)

How does that work then and if that's the case, surely you can afford the childcare?

  • To mind your own 2 children...

Once your youngest is 3 you will be entitled to the free 12.5 (or is it now 15?) hrs of childcare so that would help a little.

You have to remember that you have the benefit of a new car every few yrs and that is why your top line is so high compared to your take home pay.

Where do you think everybody's tax credits come from, if not from the tax we all pay?

As your OH is a Private Hire driver would it not be possible to adjust his hours to cut down on the amount of child care needed?

  • His bills? Meaning "business related bills"? So what is his financial contribution to your children?
