Realistically though, if you've got the cash, i don't think people would care what you spent it on. I spent 4k on my honeymoon - some people may think that's madness, others would spend twice as much. However - i didn't borrow money to do that.

The crazy part is borrowing money for a depreciating asset.

Plenty of people take loans out for new cars!? But yeh i understand people see value in different things but to spend £3700 lets say over 3 years on a loan @ 10% apr hed actually be spending nearer to £5000 on something that after those 3 years would be worth at most £500ish. I could understand if he was a proffesional gamer but he isnt and is just picking up an old hobby, there just isnt a game in the world that requires that much hardware nor will there be for another 5 years or so (if not more). Very hard to see the ops desire to get this computer, never mind, not my money!

maybe his idea of Money saving is getting a cheap power supply, after all they all the same wattage, so why pay 100s for one that will do the same job for £60 :D

It's not like it's even an MSE way of borrowing money! It'd be better to buy it on one credit card, open up a 17month interest free card and transfer the balance

ho hum, my laptop cost 400 quid 2 years ago and i play my games on a nintendo wii and my android phone. I've got a mate at work that thinks nothing about spending 500 quid on a graphics card. I think it is madness though. I could only justify that expensive a PC if it was going to be generating income from it

Lol, i like this idiot. Almost any p.c. you buy has a resale value of £0 after about 5 years. Your funny. Would love to be their when the realisation kicks in .......... '!!!!!!, i actually spent £3.7k on a computer and took out a loan to do it........click click.... boom!'

    ....... dead o.p

    Spot on :T

Many years ago my brother had his own computer shop, which meant I got everything at cost and could feed my obsession with having the fastest PC possible back then.

For instance, I didn't blink twice at the thought of giving Intel just under £600 for their latest CPU at the time (2.4 GHz Northwood), nor did I worry about throwing £800 at RAMBUS when it first came out.
Similar applied to U320 SCSI drives spinning at 10K on a dual channel Adaptec disk controller costing £300, etc, etc, etc...

One thing I did learn quick though, a £2K system back then was worth less than half that after 3 months because technology is rapidly advancing.

As for the OP taking out a loan for that amount just to buy a gaming rig (which could easily have the price cut down while keeping the same speed), he or she must be raving loco.gif

haha, you're borrowing money to spend on a games PC? Blimey, you appear to have missed the point of MSE
Not particularly. I'm active mostly in the Techie section of this forum. I'm not interested in the money saving. You don't exactly save up / borrow the money for a top of the range brand new car, then decide to save money and get the less expensive, less specced option do you. If you've got the money you will spend it. My interest is in I.T, Cars and Gaming so I'm obviously going to focus money on them

Madness indeed. It's just a shame that a fish swallowed the bait in the OP's post and allowed him to stroke his ego (and going by his sig he clearly revels and needs constant reassurance that he's outdoing the Jones'). Considering the hardship that many people on these forums have to suffer I think he should keep his crass statements to himself or go post on the Overcockers forum where he will meet people with similarly large bundles of cash / credit to dispose of (ooops, think I missed a letter there).

You missed out your spacing too

    hi, lily..oops, andrew

make sure you have an unaffected P67 sandybridge recall

trying to work out why the ssd array - as OS/apps are on different drives, and storage presumably on the mechanical..?
I was going to wait until they fixed the issue with the recall before buying the motherboard anyway.

SSD isn't in an array (except for the 120gb drives).
    RAID0 for computer games
Standard SATA for O/S + Apps
Standard SATA for Swap File and Disk for rendering video

Seriously Lil there's sensible and less than sensible setups.....

FOUR SSDs? RAID not just going to over complicate things and cause a headache further down the line when the array breaks down?
Why would an array break down? Manufacturer warranty, high end components mean nothing?

    16GB RAM? 6-12 not enough?
Of course, but I want the PC for video rendering and graphics editing plus it was cheap and you can never have enough :) (RAMDISKS)

    4GB new/added storage? -nothing to re-use?
TB I'm guessing you meant? Out with the old in the new :)

Sandy Bridge 2600K O/C? is that one of the flawed/recalled ones?
Nop, the motherboards were flawed, not the CPU's

one GTX580 not more than enough to cope with most things on highest settings for the next 4 years or so ....beyond that not just a load of extra heat loading?
To a point, heat would generate. I was planning on getting water cooling anyway at some stage. Two GTX580 overkill but why not

and are those monitors 3D or not?
    Nop, I hate 3D.

    Bluray drive?
For burning (cheaper build I'd use a Sata DVD R/W)

    re-using your old sound card?
Nop, dedicated high end audio for gaming and audio/video production

    case?
    Coolermaster HAF932

looking in the right-ish area but leaning very heavily on expensive components you'd do just fine cutting back by half and replace the entire machine sooner when the next gen stuff comes out.
As mentioned, the above spec was more of a dream build, the real spec would only be around 1900. I'm well aware of the components available and how good they are. I preferred using high end hardware because it works out cheaper in the long run.

...otherwise you're lucky I remember seeing a few sensibe/useful posts from you not to throw you into the troll box
    What you mean a few :'( ??
how much!!!! u must take your gaming seriously/ not your finances though
    Not in the slightest :D

So you are basically boasting that you are spending £3700 PLUS INTEREST on a new computer that you are just going to play games on?? WHY would you do that on a MONEYSAVING website?
Not just on a new computer, the money was spare. WHY, found it funny and I knew it would get a reaction

He joined in Dec 2009 and he has managed to learn *nothing*

When you spend top money to buy the very latest components they are not the latest components after a few months and their price drops drastically! This is fine if you're rich and don't care, but if you're financing this through a LOAN its just a stupid thing to do.

He'll be over in the Bankruptcy forum in a few years you mark my words
Nop, nyada. I have fixed a bum load of PC problems in this section however. Which is what I originally joined for ;) - simply put buying high end components means your PC is future proof than simply upgrading every 2 years anyway. As for bankruptcy. Good thing I don't put on lottery tickets with your predictions.

Unfortunately, PC hardware advances at such a rate that it's not going to stay 'top' for long and then falls to be worth a fraction of the initial investment. That's on the assumption that the hardware lasts long enough to be worth anything, which stressed components often don't, let alone the wide berth they get given on the second hand market.

As I said initially, seems excessive. There's a point in buying hardware where the cost far exceeds any realistic and useful performance increase. The specification has gone beyond that.
It's resale value never particularly interested me. The PC I'm using now is about 10 years old, I just wanted something newer and faster to replace it and playing Black Ops with a !!!!!! card + hdd is beyond slow for me now

Worth £0, got a link to these. Hell people selling PC's that cheap I'll snap their hands off.

Ofcourse it was crazy. Except the money wasn't being borrowed for the computer. It was money I had SPARE to use. The original loan was for buying a new car / insurance / loan - If I had any spare I'd be buying the PC, if not I'd be happy

His money its up to him what he spends it on. At least he'll be getting hi spec components for his money rather than low spec like you get with a certain other manufacterer though I do think the OP has gone OTT with some of his selection.
TY. Completely OTT if I actually built this spec :) but the real spec was only half that price. Since I knew the rest was a waste of money

I am raving, but as mentioned earlier the loan wasn't for gaming rig alone it was for a multitude of things

The function of the PC was for heavy gaming, video and audio editing. Folding, and graphics & server projects. So I had plentiful reason for a fast PC/Card/CPU/HDD and chunks of RAM/Space.
