Just thought I would let you all know that I've made my mind up and I'm gonna stay abroad at least for another six months.

I think I've got the "get rid of the mortgage" bug! Argh! :j
Good on you indeed. In the long run you will certainly be glad that you stayed on I am sure.

You're right I was trying my hardest to convince myself that coming back to the motherland would be the best thing. My heart was telling me one thing but my head was telling me something else!

After reading someone's comments of "Short term pain for long term gain" made me realise.... WHY WOULD I WANT TO COME BACK!

I have been looking at jobs back in the UK for the last few weeks (as im back home at the minute) and there is literally nothing. In six months I will re-evaluate the situation and see whats about. If there is nothing worth coming home for then I will simply stay out there!

Oh and fighting off the women I will be.... I don't want to get myself in a situation of getting a woman pregnant and potentially losing my house! ARGH!!!! lol

    Ryan,

Congrats on what seems a good choice for the long term benefit. Things will improve in the Uk over time, so you will get a good job here eventually. For now, focus on making those OPs :)

  • Hi Ryan, funny that you should post, i was just wondering earlier on when catching up on diaries what you had decided to do.....have to say i am a bit suprised...i really did think a return to the uk was on the cards.
What changed your mind?...was the visit home enough to keep you going for another while....or did the beautiful british weather put you off :rotfl:.
I was on holidays in dubai a couple off years ago and absolutely loved it.....but the heat is verging on ridiculous. I can imagine the culture thing must be difficult to get used to...i can remember arriving at the airport in dubai and feeling really intimidated and it was so weird because you could have heard a pin drop at arrivals....anyway enough rambling from me......the next 6 months will completely fly and you will be so glad you stayed and originallymiscellany is right....:D

haha, I completely understand when you say you felt intimidated. I get that impression on a daily basis!

What changed my mind? Difficult question to answer really but I'm guessing just pure simple maths (God Hate/Love mortgage calculators). Why come back to the UK & work in a job that is not particularly interesting and earn very little in terms of a livable wage (in the current economic climate). I think I would be stupid not to stay where I am. I can overpay far more in the job I'm doing at the minute. Add the fact I am single with no kids into the equation.... always ends up a positive number.

My only concerns now though are the security of my house. I don't want to leave it empty for the next 8/9 weeks! Well, I say empty but my parents will be checking in on it on almost a daily basis. Needless to say though people are not stupid and soon realise that it's not lived in. I've got the old "timed lights" set up and ready to go, at least to try and give the impression it's lived in. Any Ideas?

Ryan, get a timer plug for the wall socket and plug a radio into it so your house gets noise too. Maybe get a second plug so your parents can swap the radio for the TV every now and again?

Also get your parents to open curtains and close them - even maybe leaving one not properly closed one evening - so that the house changes it's appearance from time to time. Maybe even get them to change something in the window or in view like moving an ornament?

  • Hi Ryan, i am not much help with the security thing....i am from a wee village in northern ireland...the kind of one were everyone knows everyone and their front doors are open all the time.

I think the lights on timers is a good idea....at your house would it be really obvious that there is no car in the driveway or is the house on a street..as the lack of a car i presume would be less obvious on a street.
I work with elderly people in the community and a lot of them are afraid living on their own and their family put kids toys and slides in the garden to give the impression that there is a family living in the house...bizarre, but it seems to work.
Also i have heard that when people go on holidays they ask family members to put clothes on the line etc to give the impression that there is somebody in. It may be worth investing in a house alarm if you dont already have one to give you peace of mind. At least your parents will be calling and can hopefully keep an eye on things. Dont forget to keep us updated :D

No problem - something like closing the curtains well sometimes and badly other times, along with the garden tips, lights and radio is probably the most you can do.

I presume your parents have got a big box or empty drawer to put your post in out of sight?

Also maybe they could put some rubbish in your wheely bin from time to time/put a bin bag out for your binmen to collect?
