You're too poor - come back when you're richer :rotfl:.

£550 a month is not a lot to live on - covering the basics - and have a life with being able to go out, save for holidays etc, plus putting money aside for the house.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope it rains every day you are back :rotfl:

I'm not the only one who is too poor for you today then :p

I'd stick it out another 2 years and really clear that mortgage. It's not that long. Trust me when I say the UK is hard for young families on low wages.

However, I do understand the yearning to settle down, my OH and I are only 2 years older than you and we have two kids. We are unusual out of our friends though as we have done things a lot earlier than them. Largely cos we have been together 8 years and I started nesting and that was it:rotfl:

Some good friends of ours have a 2 year old and he works abroad 1 day out of every four. he is regularly away for 12 weeks at a time. We were discussing it recently and he said financially it's great but it doesn't stop the guilt of missing his son. I don't think that they are very happy.

good luck with the job interview

  • I feel for you, it sounds like you are abit homesick, either that or wanting your life to start now and feel that you are putting it on hold at the moment with your current job.

If it was me, and I'm not much older, I would stick it out. I've spent long periods of time abroad volunteering when I was younger than you are now, before I started my career. Looking back they were great times but while I was there it felt like an endurance test sometimes as I was missing home and it was hard work.

Only thing with your situation I don't understand is a previous thread you posted about getting a 30 year mortgage at 4.85% and only being able to overpay by 10% a year.

You say you can pay off £1800 a month on this post. It doesn't add up?

Ahh, when i said that figure I was referring to how much I could afford to pay off a month if I wanted too. Sorry for the confusion!

    Hi Sara!

Many thanks for the reply! I know two years isn't that long but it's long enough when you are away from home! Believe me lol!

I'm not even sure what I want to do to be honest! I have so many conflict of interests it's untrue. When I was with my ex i felt like I was getting bogged down into a relationship that I didn't want to be in now I have the single life and good money I want to be in a relationship!!

Who knows what is around the corner :eek:

I'll let you know how the interview goes!

haha typical bloke... doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow... In all seriousness though £1300 take home and £750 outgoings is tight especially if the outgoings is just mortgage/counciltax. I am thinking as your mortgage payment is around the £450 mark that is leaving you £200 for ctax, insurances. I really doubt you could do ctax, insurances, utilities, mobile/broadband/tv,tv licence etc on that £200 unless you live in a very very cheap council tax area.

    Hi Ryan,

just a thought but what would your outgoings amount to if interest rates reached say 15% Would you still be able to pay the mortgage on your uk wage?

Is a job in the uk secure enough? Lots of companies are struggling at the moment.

Worst case scenario i suppose is a high interest rate combined with loss of work = loss of house :( As someone else said the uk is not a good place at the moment.

Sorry to put a downer on things :o

  • Ryan, I honestly think you'll regret it if you come back now.

Even though a few posters have said it in a tongue in cheek way, just think of what a good catch the women will see you as a few years down the line.

Short term pain for huge long term gain.

    Hi Ryan,

You're limiting yourself to two options - Dubai and the UK. There might be others if you start looking - you could maybe try and get a job in another country - Oz, NZ, or the States.

You're also still young enough to take advantage of working holiday visas if you don't actually have enough skills to emigrate - particularly if you built up enough money in your current job to pay your mortgage for a year or so. The world (and the girls!) would be your oyster, then.

I was struck what someone said about you suddenly lacking goals. Maybe stick it out in Dubai but use all that spare time you have to do some study to increase your long term career prospects... and your ability to increase your earnings over time.

and I've probably just confused you more!!! Good luck with whatever you want to do.

Just thought I would let you all know that I've made my mind up and I'm gonna stay abroad at least for another six months.

I think I've got the "get rid of the mortgage" bug! Argh! :j
