  • Ihave just bought 2 books from Booksale this morning, 1 on vinegar and 1 on bicarbonate of soda. This is how the second book tells you to make a pwder for you dishwasher:-

2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda mix with
    2 tablespoons borax

I'm going to give it a try tonight, anyone else?
I already have both in - Dripak is the brand I have which is available at a lot of independant ironmongery-type shops. I'm pretty sure Dripak have a website which could be Googled for local suppliers. Will report back on my results later- corned beef hash for tea.

  • well now, is this the most unpopular post ever!
I did try it all out and it worked well, but seemed like large quantities. Today I did it with just 1 teaspoon of borax and soda bic. and it worked fine too. The big test will be on the dishes from the roast tonight - will update despite the complete lack of interest.

  • Hi Dierdrie - I'm interested - I read the post but there wasn't really the need for a reply as I was awaiting results!

Glad to hear it went well. Can I just ask, what exactly is Borax? I've heard/read loads of references to it but not had the courage to ask before in case it's a really dumb question :confused:

    I've been Money Tipped!
i'm waiting for an update too ... bought value dishwasher tabs and they were pants!
    That's Numberwang!
  • I'm interested too, been using washing up liquid in the dishwasher and its ok but not great.

I wish I could get hold of large quantities of bicarb.

Bobbykins, Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that is a strong de-greaser. You can get it in the larger Boots stores. There's lots about it on the Mega Indexed Thread (or whatever the kids are calling it these days...) HTH

This works out much more expensive than dishwasher powder. Each of these cost me £1.30 for 300g at my local hardware shop (equiv £4.33 per kg) and 3kg dishwasher powder costs £3.99 (equiv £1.33 per kg).

I guess it depends if you are doing this to save money or for environmental reasons.
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!

I saw on here last week that some people have used washing power in their dishwashers.

I thought i would give it a go and it worked!

I put about a half teaspoon in with vinegar as rinse aid, set the washer and crossed my fingers that there wouldnt be the white powdery build up once the washer had finished.

I was truly amazed, the glasses sparkled and all the dishes were as clean as if i had used Finish.

We have extremely hard water here.

I have now used it about 5 times.

I don't have a dishwasher, and I'm not trying to pick you to bits here - I'm just curios when I ask my question...don't the dishes feel slippy?

I ran out of washing up liquid once, so used soap powder - how I didn't lose a cup drying, I'll never know.:rotfl:

You should have done a vinegar rinse - it removes the soap residue :D

No in all honesty there is no slippery feel or squeaky feel or any smell to the dishes.

It could be that in my part of the world (Middle East) washing powder works as well as the store bought stuff, which comes out at about 8pounds at the moment.

I always fill the rinse aid dispenser with vinegar so that might, as greenbee says, be the trick.
