EDIT 16/02/2011:

Still haven't managed to find a job but I have completed by emergency funding paperwork from my uni so I am now in a position to arrange a meeting with a money doctor. Thanks for all the help and support I have received in this thread, I really appreciate it!

Original Post:

Hey everyone,

I''ve been going through a bit of a bad time financially ltely. Due to previous debts and accomodation debts, my student loan from January has run out so I am left with no money. Luckily, my parents send me a small amount of money each (£20/30) and I really appreciate it cos they are on low income but this isn't quite enough for me to live off. I am in the process of getting a job and I have applied for five but I am still waiting to hear back.

I owe money to Natwest, lloyds TSB, Santander, Capital One and the university. Luckily, my dad has a sorted out a store card that I had trouble with.

Last week, I received a letter saying I need to pay my Lloyds TSB money off now or else I will be taken to court. I only went over my limit by a small amount but now I think they're charging me around £200.

I really don't know what to do, in my cupboard I only have cup-a-soup and flour, sugar, butter left that I can use. The rest of the stuff is things like oxo and cayenne pepper powder that I can't eat by themselves (I can make biscuits using the flour sugr and butter) (Btw, I bought this stuff when I wasn't so poor, if I had enough money to do a proper shop right now then I would buy chep food (basic range) )

I really don't know what to do for money. I have no printing credit at uni so soon I won't be able to hand in assignments nd this really worries me. I also can't afford to use the laundrette so I need to wash my hand but I have no washing powder.

I also can't afford to do any leisure activities in my spare time. I want to join the local Scout Network as I have been in the movement since I was young but I just can't afford to.

I'm speechless. While reading your post, I feel like crying. I'm also a student but I've never been in that kind of situation. I fell short of money a couple of times but I was able to cope by doing part time jobs. Since you are using the internet, why not look for some? If you are resourceful enough, there are a lot of sites needing article writers or offering data entry jobs. I hope you can find a job that would help you.

These are a luxury; not some sort of right.

Unfortunately this is against MSE rules. Promoting business is not allowed and representing a company requires authorisation.

I have reported your post because of this.

hmmm i think your forward planning leaves a lot to be desired..... can you talk to your parents and go home for a weekend, get your immediate stuff washed ask if you can cook some meals to take back with you perhaps, im sure they would buy you a small fridge if you havent got one. Cheap handwashing powder isnt expensive you could always use soap if need be.

Try volunteering in the scout network that way you could go for free. Look for free student events to socialise, we have just had jesus people on our campus offering free lunch for two days. send off for more than five jobs easy by email, try some pub work it may include food and help with the socialising.

life isnt easy and your learning the hard way, uni it seems is not all booze fun and a bit of studying is it.

Try your local student union too for help, you may get a student life loan to cover immediate expenses, try job centre for any benefits etc.

Have a word with your tutor re printing off assignments to see if you can email, do through the student online system etc or if the administrator could print them off if your desperate.

It could be worse, you could have two children that depend on you.....

A full-time student can only get benefits if they're a parent (single or part of a couple) or disabled.

Go to the student support offices of your uni and ask about the Access to Learning fund.

Universities have a pot of money that they can give to students who are in such financial dire straits that they might have to drop out of their course if they aren't helped.

Which uni are you at, I'll try to find you a phone number.

I reported it too, I think it's awful that a commercial company should take advantage of someone in this sad situation, I'm so glad I'm not a student these days. Hopefully the post will be removed - don't forget to take down your quoted post too Lokolo, as you would otherwise be promoting this George's business for him.

    Thanks

    Liz

Yeah, I have applied for a few jobs in the local area but I haven't heard anything back yet. Thank you, I didn't think of writing articles online but I will look into it.

Hmm.. I never thought of going home for a weekend to get all my stuff sorted out. My parents live about 3 hours away but I will ask them if I can do something like that, I think it would really help.

Yeah, I am desperately trying to find a job at the moment. Thank you for your post, I really appreciate it :)

I understand that it could be worse, I'm not trying to make out that this is the worst situation in the world or anything, I'm just trying to get a bit of help.
