What's it about?

Electrical retailer Comet uses an auction site to offload its end-of-the-line, ex-display and cosmetically-damaged stock. So if you’re not snobby about having last season’s washing machine or a tiny scratch on your DVD player, you can pick up some top bargains at
Comet Clearance.

There are often some seriously good prices, though always check a bargain is a bargain using the shop bots to compare with the cheapest prices (see cutting edge internet shopping article)

A top tip

If you look at the ‘closing soon’ auctions, some of the stuff can be much cheaper compared to the store price.

Please report any top spots

If you see anything that's a total best buy, report it in the thread below by clicking reply

TBH I have been on this site (last christmas) when we were looking for a new fridge/freezer and oven and diddnt find any that went for a "bargain" and bought locally for a lot cheaper...ex comet stock included :rotfl:

Good luck for other MSE'ers tho!

  • Just saw a fridge for £30, then noticed the £10 bid increments and £30 delievery (which is the cost of the fridge) and suddenly it doesnt seem quite as attractive.
  • There are some great deals on this site but like with most auctions you just have to be patient.
I have bought several items, the latest being a Hotpoint washer

This retails at £270 and I got it for £135 + £30 del which I think is a bargain.

The 'scratch' they refer to I still havent found and even if it was there it would be hidden by cabinets anyway.
I also couldnt find the dint on a fridge/freezer which I bought from the site earlier in the year.

I would highly recommend this site if you dont mind waiting for the right product and deal!!

Often when an item is delivered after the purchase from comet instore / comet online / domestic and general / woolworths / whoever uses comet etc... a customer may occasionally reject the delivery of an item if the packaging is damaged or contents are physically/operationally defective and so they end up on the clearance site or randomly dispatched to stores.

Some items can be a bargain......some auctions oddly are seen going over the cost of if purchased from NEW price. People bid weirdly or are simply auction addicts! It really is strange but to me is not a first stop for looking for major appliance items...

Can often get better deals in store IMHO....

Now it's on general release, I notice a laptop new price of 379, but is now 293 to buy - presumably the bidding will go higher still. This is for a "refurbished" laptop, whatever that means.

I would expect a lot cheaper for something that is substandard in some way - and would be alarmed if the new people who go to the site expecting a bargain get drawn into bidding on something that really is not worth what they are paying for it.
Comet must be rubbing their hands at the free advertising.

Hopefully in bette condition than a TV I returned to another online shop a couple of years ago. It arrived with a small hole in the box which had caused a small gouge in the plastic in the middle above the screen.

This was no doubt caused by the courier being careless - as evidenced the day after when the same guy uplifted it. I gave him it and shut my front door and heard an almighty bang, opened it again to see the TV at the bottom of the stairs!
  • I've used this site to buy a tumble dryer that had cosmetic damage.
We keep ours in the garage so it wasn't a problem.

Had a quick look at the HD TV,s. One had a bid price higher than the in store price. Don,t think I,ll bother.
Humans only use around forty percent of their brains capacity. Imagine what we could achieve if we used the other seventy percent!
  • Used this site to buy a washer dryer.First one flooded the kitchen twice, second one just went round and round and did not doing anything. They came out and told me it needed a new programmer at that point I told them I need to have my money back.Weny to John Lewis and price matched washing machine and seperate T/D.
However did buy a naff looking DAB radio for about £14.99 which is fine.
So some you win some you lose.
