Cambelt Change Con!

No, mine's a 2003, hopefully OK.0

Rather you than me.
Full kit, belt, pullies, tensioner, and water pump, every time.
Cost difference to not doing them is less than a tank of petrol.
Depends on what car you have. The full cambelt kit for a Kia Sedona is over £300. Water pump £50 more.... Its a pig of a job too with no room to work. I guess you could say that while you are up to your neck in grease just as well do it all.....
Looks like I would rather buy a used car from you than me.....NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
The belt you can see is the drive or alternator belt and costs around 40 quid to change inc the cost of the belt as all it entails is loosening a couple of bolts.
When changing a cam belt, they should also change the tensioner, idler and waterpump and it usually costs around 200 quid for the lot.0 -
We had another post here a while ago where a poster was all up for an almighty scrap with the garage for not changing his Oil Filter.
After a similar fight to get the make/model/photos it transpired the filter was an element type filter. The Filter casing was dirty so the poster condemned the incompetent garage!!0 -
How ironic in amongst all this Water Pump discussion

How ironic in amongst all this Water Pump discussion

Yep, very ironic. My fatal mistake was not actually saying "Make sure you change the water pump at the same time" (I assumed they would either have done it automatically or suggested it to me, them being experts) - now I have a car which is probably going to be scrapped and I am totally skint.
Oh hindsight is a wonderful thing.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

A new belt will be a lot stronger and denser than an old one and will not fit well, this puts more pressure on already worn parts thus causing them to fail. Any mechanic worth 10p knows that.
It amounts to an act of vandalism IMO to change a cam belt without renewing the parts that go with it.0 -

No, your fatal mistake was actually continuing to drive the car when you knew that the water pump had failed and this allowed the engine to overheat with the resultant head gasket failure. This was preventable, if the car had not been driven in that condition.
After spending £600 pounds on the car, it would seem silly to scrap it now but perhaps you really need to find a better mechanic! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
