Tesco CC Upgrade

  • I reckon the biggest problem will be for those who, like me, have had the credit card since early on when the rate was 1 per £2 everywhere. We gain no more points (apart from the 650 a year incentive) but a few months down the line when we see that the World Mastercard isn't so great won't be able to get back on the good Visa rate of points we are used to.

I have decided that I will probably not change to World mastercard. Initially i didn't see the problem changing to it as I assumed it was plain old Mastercard, but now I see some places don't take it I'll stick with good old Visa.

I have a Tesco finest visa card. I received the ugrade offer on Wednesday. I rang up about the points to check if I got the same with the new card. They said "yes". No problem.
Today I received a letter saying that I had not paid my card and they were charging me £12 etc. I use this card solely for my work expenses and have it set to pay off the full balance every month by direct debit (no interest). I have been doing this for the last 5 years.
It turns out that they "upgraded" my card in January without telling me and so my direct debit was refused, as the credit card number was wrong. When I have looked more closely at my last statement it has a different card number on it! I have not received a new card and apparently it is not due to be dispatched for another 2 weeks. My current card is now blocked, even though I have paid the outstanding balance today over the phone. The lady I spoke to was very apologetic and has now sorted it all out.
My message is: check your latest statement to make sure they haven't "upgraded" you already, without telling you and without sending you the new card yet.

    BEWARE!!!

Thanks for posting this. I've just checked mine and all is well so far, I'm glad you got it all sorted out.
Funnily enough the letter from them about this change says that " if you pay by direct debit you don't need to do anything - we'll update your Direct Debit for you." Good to see Tesco managed this for you (insert ironic smiley here).

There is no easy way to see how many points you are getting per £1 ...
Actually, there is ... at least if you can access the detailed My Clubcard Account pages online. (I think this is still being rolled out, I could only access mine recently).

Clicking on View in the Detail column, you come across every single transaction with details of spend and points earned. Retail transactions show points earned in the various Tescos @ 2 per whole £ while credit card transactions show points at the appropriate rate, in my case 1 per complete £2.

I'll be sorry to see my Visa card go. There's nothing in the change for me, apart from a notional gift of £6.50 p.a. from Mr Tesco. For Tesco, the advantages are greater. They can charge higher fees from merchants who will be the sad partners in this exchange.

I don't have this facility on my account unfortunately.

I called this morning to keep my Visa card, the deadline is 20th February, so not long till then, a surprisingly short window.

I know this is going to sound really sad :o
I have a spreadsheet on my pc and check the CC website every morning for an up to date points balance on my account, which I record on the spreadsheet.
Points earned instore and points earned on everything I spend on cc, instore and elsewhere, is input to the spreadsheet so I can reconcile what I 've spent/points earned with the change in points balance every day. Only takes a minute or two :o.
I started doing this a while ago when there were lots of extra points offers about and I wasn't convinced I was always getting the points I should be (I was right :D) as we were having a major points-earning push before booking a Virgin Holiday.

I don't get the detailed breakdown on my account on the website, I've been told its because we have old Tesco Finest CC.

    Did you get much resistance?
I'm leaning that way myself but when I 'phoned them to discuss just got a major sales pitch which didn't actually address my concerns, then got cut off!

They just said don't you want the 650 points, I said I don't want this card, they said OK we'll confirm by letter and the Visa card will be retained.

Pretty clear from this thread that very few of us are absolutely clear as to what we're currently getting from our existing cards.

My Platinum Visa expires shortly, and I've had the World Mastercard letter too. I've had the present card for many years, and my recollection is that it gives 1 point per £2 everywhere. That's why we use the Clubcard Plus card instore - more points.

The new one looks much the same, and I can't really see any downside. Mastercard and Visa are fine pretty well everywhere.

Since Tesco debased the Clubcard scheme last year, we switched all our spending away from Tesco Visa anyway, to get 1% cashback from Capital One (also a Mastercard). More profitable - and none of the difficulties trying to use Clubcard points on an increasingly expensive and useless collection of Clubcard Deals.

As part of the switch, we also more or less gave up shopping at Tesco altogether. Lidl provides the basics at far lower cost than Tesco (similar or better quality) and Waitrose provides far better quality meat, fruit, vegetables and non-basics at not much more than Tesco charge. Tesco, in fact, has become increasingly irrelevant since the Deals became increasingly pointless.

I don't miss Tesco at all -far from it. But I'll happily pick up the 650 points every year just for keeping the card and making the odd purchase on it. :rotfl:
