Might upset some Olympic fans if they want to use their only Visa card for official olympic purchases because they only accept Visa.

    Not a problem for me.

How is that good business sense turning away potential customers like that, I would have thought they need all the custom they can get!

I have therefore asked him to send me written confirmation of exactly how many points I would receive if I upgrade to this new offer based on my old terms with Tesco, rather than a generic letter.

MSE News may pick up on this credit card change and possibly get this confirmation direct from Tesco.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • I have had mine from year dot and am sure they are trying to pull a fast one on the people who still have the original card, and better terms.

Also I remember when I had a MasterCard that it was not accepted at nearly as many retailers, especially abroad.

I agree with the above statement that it would be great if MSE could find out what the score was and let everybody know.

I have just received this letter, I feel maybe I will keep my visa platinum version.
Think Visa is better accepted especially on european transactions.
I will follow the thread for a few days before I decide though.
    Me too

  • Phoned today and they confirm points reward will stay the same, as has been said there are club card and credit card points as I have both my rates are:
    4 points / £2 at tesco.com
    3 points / £2 in store (Thought this was 2 points / £1 but can't be sure i.e. 1 club card point + 1 credit card point)
    1 point / £2 outside of Tesco

Still unsure about the change as thought Visa had a greater acceptance though as long as Tesco use Visa you can always switch back but do get the feeling they will move exclusively to Mastercard eventually.
It would be far better not to be treated like an idiot with the "Upgrade" letter and have the real reason upfront!

I received this upgrade letter too, and it seemed to me that I would be getting less points than I do already. I phoned the upgrade hotline number and got through to what sounded like someone in South Africa. I couldn't understand what the woman was saying to me when I challenged the number of points, and she didn't even ask me for my account details anyway. I then tried calling the UK helpline number of 0845 6040406. I spoke with a very helpful lady who confirmed that I receive 1 point per £2 spent anywhere, 2 points per £1 spent in Tesco (inclusive of double points) and an additional 1 point per £2 spent in Tesco for paying on the Tesco Credit Card. Therefore, a £2 in Tesco gives 5 points. The upgrade letter states that I will receive exactly the same terms as I currently do, but says I would receive 1 point for every £2 spent on my card. I phoned the hotline number again and got through to a much more helpful person who said that I would receive 3 points per £2 spend in Tesco, and 1 point per £2 spend anywhere else. When I told him that I currently receive 5 points per £2 spend in Tesco, and the new deal is only 3 points per £2 Tesco spend, he went away to speak to his supervisor. He came back on the phone and said that the letter I had received was aimed at any regular Tesco Credit Card user, but because I had the older Tesco Finest Platinum Visa card, my current deal would remain the same. I have therefore asked him to send me written confirmation of exactly how many points I would receive if I upgrade to this new offer based on my old terms with Tesco, rather than a generic letter. He said he will do this before the deadline date of 20th February, so I'll just have to see if the letter turns up in the post now. If it really is going to be the same for existing customers on the old terms and conditions, then I think it's worth upgrading for the extra 650 bonus points each year.

I am confused! I rang up and she advised that we get 3 points for each £2 we spend in tesco and 1 point for each point spent elsewhere (so the latter is the same as the new card) but I didn't go through all the combinations you highlighted. I think on that basis I will miss the card as I will be worse off although this is not highlighted in the letter I received.

Did they ask you for your clubcard number before giving you the points amount?
  • I have a Tesco finest visa card. I received the ugrade offer on Wednesday. I rang up about the points to check if I got the same with the new card. They said "yes". No problem.
Today I received a letter saying that I had not paid my card and they were charging me £12 etc. I use this card solely for my work expenses and have it set to pay off the full balance every month by direct debit (no interest). I have been doing this for the last 5 years.
It turns out that they "upgraded" my card in January without telling me and so my direct debit was refused, as the credit card number was wrong. When I have looked more closely at my last statement it has a different card number on it! I have not received a new card and apparently it is not due to be dispatched for another 2 weeks. My current card is now blocked, even though I have paid the outstanding balance today over the phone. The lady I spoke to was very apologetic and has now sorted it all out.
My message is: check your latest statement to make sure they haven't "upgraded" you already, without telling you and without sending you the new card yet.

    BEWARE!!!

I felt immediately on reading the letter there was much more unsaid than said. No reason given for the change and any question of an upgrade wasn't supported by additional benefits. Tesco has just been forced to change a nasty scam they were running (like Nat West/RBS) where they set their own exchange rate for transactions abroad - always in Tesco's favour. It seems that they are not out to do us any good and I hope MSE will explore this in detail and let us know the truth.
