Probably because they need extra supervision whilst outside compared to the 'normal' child...they tend to have no sense of danger and will just run off and into the road, even quite old children when they really should have road sense.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I've not seen any child I've met with ADHD run into roads any different to children without ADHD
The day I had my Beautiful son is the day everything came together for me. For someone so small he done so much and made me complete.

My son will just run out into the road without giving it any thought whatsoever. He's being assessed still!

When I took him to see the child psych she said he looked as though he had an attention disorder and on the autistic spectrum but she needs to see him again. We've got the speech therapist on Wednesday and the way they see how the brain works is quite an enlightening experience. It shows that he isn't capable of predicting things like ' if I step into this road I might get run over'.

  • DS is 16 and has been run over several times. He has other conditions but its the adhd that makes him so impulsive.
Be forewarned, once you get DLA because his adhd is so bad you will find it very hard for him to get a driving liense in the future!

this is good news for me, as i dont want my lads driving a car, they dont look where they are going when they are walking, always bumping into lamp posts and other people etc, heaven knows, what would happen in a years time, if they were easily able to get a provisional licence

Thats rubbish, a child getting DLA for ADHD or any other condition has no affect what so ever on getting a driving licence.

You cannot claim on the one hand that a person is so impulsive that they need a carer to maintain their personal safety (and other peoples) when they are outside (which you are effectively saying when you apply for mobility component or HRC, and then say that that person is safe to drive a vehicle unsupervised. You have to declare ADHD on application for a driving license and the DVLA will ask for a doctors report.

The doctor will either state that the person is ok to drive (in which case they are not able to claim DLA on the grounds of unsafe behaviour) or that their impulsivity could be of risk to the public.

Speaking only about ADHD (not any other disability) and definitely not rubbish, and I speak from experience.

we're talking about KIDS with ADHD. in case you didn't know, kids arent allowed to have a driving license anyway!

even people with ADHDimprove with age. a child needing supervision usually doesnt need it until they become an adult.
