ADHD DLA Claim

Hi i have just applied for DLA for my son who has adhd. I knew nothing about it until a friend who's son has the same condition told me her son gets dla. Has anyone else who has a child with adhd been awarded dla? My son is only 9 and recently been diagnosed and is now on medication.
thank you

  • it is hard to get for adhd, they have to be very bad. school let us down with our report saying that they thought he would be ok to cross the road and that he wasnt a danger to himself.

infact they only ready that bit and turned the whole claim down and we had to get them to look at it again because they seemed to forget the fact he was tube fed and had other disabilities and just reported ont he behaviour side.

i wish you all the luck int he world for it but if you dont apply you will never know.

also if any of the charming people turn up with the usual rubbish about naughty kids and feeding them crap just ignore it.

It is possible to get DLA for the genuine kids with severe ADHD, I have helped a few families to get and if you have the support of your pead. and GP you should be ok.

If he's just been diagnosed it may be difficult to convince the DWP that he's had the needs for the last 3 months.

Get reports from your LOs psychologist, school etc and send with the form.

If he's only recently started taking medication for this condition you really need to wait and see whether or not it's effective before applying. Hopefully the treatment will be successful and you won't be eligible.
  • i have two sons with sever ADHD, so severe that they are both at special schools, as they cant cope in mainstream, my lads dont sleep well, and are often up and about during the nite, and they both get hrc and lrm,
loves to knit and crochet for others

My son has high functioning ASD (not ADHD although both conditions are classed as being on the autistic spectrum) attends a mainstream school and has no medication. We receive mrc & lrm elements. Have been in receipt of DLA for the past 4yrs since formal diagnosis.

I would recommend getting some help via the CAB for completing the form for the first time, it's very dependant on you using the correct wording.

  • Thank you for that link. After 3 years of trying, my 6yr old has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. We've just had the DLA forms through, and they are more than a bit daunting.
I've just been looking at some of the wonky cushions etc recommended to us by our case worker to help him sit better and the prices are a bit steep, so being able to get a little extra money would make a massive difference (as well as helping us replace the things he breaks/loses on a daily basis :().

I have known children with ADHD but can I ask why you get mobility for this?
The day I had my Beautiful son is the day everything came together for me. For someone so small he done so much and made me complete.
