I got married last year and feel quite strongly that the bridesmaid should not be asked to pay. The only exception I would make is if the budget is so tight that you cannot afford a bridesmaid and it is informal, so you say "be our bridesmaid, and just wear whatever you like/whatever you would have worn as a guest".
I bought the dress, shoes and wrap. We did our own makeup. BM has curly hair and wanted to do her own, but I would have happily paid for a blow-dry (total wedding hair bill - £12 for one blow-dry for me, bargain).
My bridesmaid did pay for her own hotel room, but I know that she would have done that even if she had been a normal guest (and her parents were actually close enough to drive had she wanted to stay sober all night, so it was her call).
I think that it's really unfair to expect people to subsidise a wedding that you want but can't afford. I really feel for you though, a difficult conversation coming up...0 -

Apparently I have to sort out my own dress, shoes and most of the bits and bobs but the wedding isn't to far away so i won't have to pay for a hotel etc. Just hope I can get something Ebay-able! I think we are doing our own hair and make-up so it won't come to too much.
Try Monsoon they have a great sale on at the moment with lots of beautiful elegant dresses at 70% off. They have a bridal collection but also ballgown and formal type dresses too- you're bound to find something!0 -
