I've done installs that have taken a couple of day's they were that big! To re-instate a cut across your drive it'd take no more than 3 bags of readymix concrete or tarmac, same stuff you get in the DIY stores.

I'd insist on a Site Survey to be done. Here's the details of the Preston office.

    Cable House
    2-8 Frenchwood Avenue
    Preston
    PR1 4QF

    Phone: 01772 902902
    Fax: 01772 490022

It's the old Telewest details but they should still be the same, ask for the Installation Manager or Contracts Manager.

Thanks for this - I will try and give them a call next week probably.

I'll go for a walk around later on to see where the actual cabinet is. I sort of remember seeing it, but not sure. The next Swept T is 50 steps from the one in my drive going West.

Ok, case finished... Apparently there is a blockage in the line somewhere and we will not be getting the services.

I'd double check that as in the pic above,I cab see external CATV & Phone cables (the black) & the same of internal (the white) so the chances are the is already a drop cable for you in the cabinet.

The metal cover is a 'road pit' that allows the installers access to all the ducting & cabels.
In the pic below are 2 smaller covers next to each other, are these stop cocks or is one of them the Tee?

I'd still ask for a survey as the blockage may be clear. It looks to me like the construction guys have been out & fitted a draw wire (the blue rope) & in all honesty, the only way to see if the is still a blockage there is to 'rod the drop' with the Cobra, which is a big yellow coil of wire which is shoved down the street ducting & used to pull the cable back thru. You push in down the duct from one road pit to another, attatch the cable & pull it back thru.

The smaller covers, I guess, are the stop cocks, as they hacve letter W stamped on them.

The guy from complaints department was adamant that they would not be installing services for us, as the blockage is 'somewhere in the line', and they are not going to try and find out where.

The rope probably has been there since the house built, as that is what the previous owner told us - that there is a rope in there.

Thanks very much for your help though.

Well, maybe we should prove to be the pain and apply for it in a week or so through the website, if we still "can have the cable services".

I was trying to ask if construction team could have mixed up the number 6 and 8, and was told that whilst I might be able to mix up the address, construction team definitely couldn't. Of course, they are not human, they don't make mistakes!!!!!

When asked how do the part of the website works that tells you if you can have the services or not works, I was told that when construction team tells them that a house can have services, then they update the database. So, someone decided to update my house even if I can't have the services. But then - they don't make mistakes.

Never mind. Will live with the current connection, will just try and move to cheaper supplier then (with AOL currently).

I'd ask them to try as the looks to be a cable already in place & I'd also lift the steel pit cover in your drive to check if the cable is coiled up.Sometimes if the duct was blocked,we'd coil the cable up in the pit.If it is'nt,then I'd say the's a good chance that your service is installed but not connected in the cab & house.Chances are the cabling was ran from the home to the cab when the house was built. In fact,I'm pretty certain it was.

All you need to lift the cover is a pair of pliers as they aren't locked.

If you and your neighbour agree to install virgin at the same time they might be more inclined to go the extra mile to get it installed

Maybe - but my neighbour wouldn't go for it, so it is not an option.

I thought I'll update on the saga...

When we applied last November, the Virgin said there is no chance we can get it, and finally refunded the £25 end of February. We waited a bit for them to remove us from their list that we can have the services for a couple of weeks (we were told they will when I called them).

Mid March - according to the website, we can still have the services, so we applied again - online, in OH name, where given installation date. Day or two before we received a call that some work needs to be carried out outside our house, and it will take 2-3 weeks. Ok, week before EAster we noticed that some work was done as there was a small new cover in our bit of the lawn at the front. OH called Virgin, who told they haven't heard from contractors yet, so they cannot confirm that the work is complete and gives the installation date.

Then last week, OH received a phone call giving us installation date of this weekend. We have also received a letter yesterday, stating the date and time of the installation!

Ok, it is not a done deal yet, but that is the closest we have been. We didn't dare to cancel our phone line or broadband as yet (BT and AOL), and I will not do that until we can actually get online!

And the best bit, if it works out, is that this time we went through Quidco as well, and we are due to get £120 cashback as well.
