  • Hi,

gosh, how do you know it's just one of the piston rings, without seeing the piston, in my day each piston had four rings.

What can I say I suppose it is easy, assuming you know what a cylinder head is, you could do it yourself. Get a socket set and remove the head, take it to a garage that does rebores.
That misses out the step where you remove the engine!

Piston rings don't melt. Pistons do. OP - Are you sure you're identifying the right thing? You'll only be able to see the piston rings when the pistons are out.

I've replaced pistons in the past. Its almost always an engine out job*, and usually a rebore. And often work needed to the head too. Have you priced up a second hand engine instead?

*There are a some engines where you can remove the sump and drop a piston out with the engine in place, but the Puma won't be one of them.
  • It's the sort of job you need to be able to do yourself OP to be economically viable.

Engine out, cyl head and sump off, undo big ends and remove all pistons.
Examine for damage, as said the ring won't have melted but may have broken.
Don't understand why it should need a new head unless parts of the ring have broken up and battered the head.
Chances are you'll need at least one new piston and a set of piston rings for the other three...no point in putting it back without, possibly new bearing shells if the old one's are getting thin...much measuring and examination to be done here.
You'll have to examine and measure the bores, the bore with the damaged piston if indeed that's what it is may well be scored anyway...which means a rebore, new pistons, possible crank regrind and all new bearings, gaskets, possible new strech head bolts, numerous sundries, might as well remove and examine valves, dekoke and regrind them whilst it's apart.

That's a lot of work, will only be viable if you can do the work yourself and why others have suggested another engine.

However, if you have another engine fitted, keep the old one and strip it yourself to see what's what...we all had to learn how to do these sorts of jobs, we didn't have the money years ago to pay others to do it...those days are returning as the country goes further downhill, learn how to do it yourself.

I'd go for the new engine, fixing something like this will cost a small fortune...... Your looking at £900+.
