If you buy from a garage (or any company) and there is outstanding finance the car belongs to you and the garage is the one who will be chased to settle not you.
It sounds like a complete con to me.
At £78 its a con.....
At £20 it's debatably worth it..... the people doing the chasing have no respect for the fact the dealer has responsibility to check and you can end up in a lot of hassle and intimidation.
If you don't mind intimidation then it's not worth it, stick to your guns, go to court if needed etc. or pay £20 and make sure you don't get a car with outstanding finance or a CAT C or D.
It's a shame and shouldn't be necessary but at £20 it's not a poor use of money for peace of mind.0 -
These checks are part and parcel of running a dealership. The checks are done up front by them in order for them to safely sell on the vehicle. It is just like any other cost in preparing the vehicle for sale.
They then set the advertised price to cover their costs and make a margin.
It is a sneaky double count to try to sell you this as a separate item.
They argued the case with me until I started to walk out and then quickly conceded. Similarly when they tried to charge me credit card transaction fee, they were told to absorb it or lose the sale.
Don't be fooled.
Oh, and I won't even shop there next time as I don't want the associated hassle of them trying it on and then having to argue about it.0 -
On the sticker on the passenger side of the windscreen it clearly states that the £98.99 vehicle status check charge is an OPTIONAL EXTRA along with the price of a tax disc.
Ask the sales person about that after they have told you that you MUST pay it and then work out whether or not you are in good company.0 -
I put a deposit down on a car 2 weeks ago. I found this thread when I searched EH's Vehicle Admin Fee which was added onto the price. When I found out this was an optional payment the salesman got my wrath. It was not explained to me when I agreed to buy the car that this payment was optional. The salesman initially argued with me saying it was not optional however he would not answer my direct question when I asked if it was optional or compulsory. He then said that he over priced my trade in to include the additional £98 Vehicle Admin Fee and that he would revalue my trade in and reduce it by £98 if I didn't pay the fee.
At this point I told him to forget the sale and return my deposit. Oddly enough, he then said he would reduce the price by £98 and honour my trade in value.
Will not be using EH again!0
