they are NOT COMPULSORY they will tell you this to garentee the payment to them, 99.9% of their stock will have already been HPI'D on delivery.

you tell them to put it in writing if they say it is compulsory and show you proof that it is garentee they will decline and be stumped at the mouth.

yes a HPI will give you some security if it were reported stolen, finance. but buying from a dealer you have a comeback by law anyway, and if you ask the important question is it a cat write off they have to disclose that to you, if they dont and hpi finds it is, you can decline the deal.

TBH i think them telling you its compulsory to have it should be reported to the OFT, tactics to obtain extra cash for something that is available to the public at a much cheaper price and call it compulsory is BAD practace in my book.

hell i bought a car from a small lacal trader and he handed the HPI to me Free to put towards the documentation of the car. so these chains of dealers should be able to do the same surely.

I have just agreed a deal with EH for a car which I am picking up at the end of next week. Whilst the salesman was going through the details he mentioned the £99 status check which I said must be an option but he said no its compulsory. The car is for my daughter (who was with me at the time) and as she really wanted it I didnt want to make too much of a deal about it at the time but now realise that I should have been firmer and said no.
Any advice on what I can do now if anything to save myself the £100. I was told the car was owned by Vauxall as a demonstrator so there shoud not by any HPI issues to worry about.
    Thanks in advance

First of all, it won't have been owned by Vauxhall, but by he dealer. The dealer will have had finance on it. Nonetheless, if it was Evans Halshaw's demonstrator, are they telling you that they cannot trust themselves with their own vehicles? If it was owned by them, why would they need to do an HPi check on their own cars?

When you collect the car, refuse to pay the ninety-nine pounds and tell them if it isn't taken off, you will walk away from the deal. They will not let you walk for the sake of a hundred pounds. If they do, walk away anyway. Because this fee was not declared at the point of advertising, they have not right to keep any of your deposit. It is a bit like the airlines who advertise a flight for a pound, but it ends up costing you a hundred pounds in fees and taxes.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I wish I'd have read this a couple of days ago. My son bought his 1st car from EH this week, and yes, he was stung for the £99 check. Was told it was compulsory, and being none the wiser paid it. I do have another query if anyone can help. EH say there cars comes with an MOT inspection, and health check, yet my son came home with his car with the old MOT, which runs till Oct11, EH also failed to show that ther were 3 advisories on the MOT, I don't think my son asked all the right questions, but I think he may have been slighty stung. Any advice appreciated.

I would be seeking some advice from Trading Standards.

Saying something is compulsory when it isn't.

Selling a vehicle with known defects without pointing them out to you or remedying them is appalling.

Sounds all like a back street shady dealer and not a major car retail chain. Shame on them.

Evans Halshaw are a bunch of ROBBING THIEVES!!!

I had exactly the same problem when looking to buy a second hand car from them a couple of weeks ago.

I was told that the check was compulsory. When I asked the salesman how much it cost Evans Halshaw to carry out the search he looked highly embarrassed. I told him that I knew that it cost them around £5 and asked him how he could justify charging the customer almost £100. He didn't have an answer to that!

Eventually he agreed to waive the fee, but how many other folk are being completely tricked into this complete con?

The moral of the story is clear - STAY AWAY FROM EVANS HALSHAW.

  • Been through this rubbish with Evan Halshaw in Hull

Was told I couldn't take a car unless I paid the £98 HPI fee - car was cheap and a good deal otherwise, so signed up and then complained to their head office

By the time I picked the car up the £98 had been knocked off my final invoice and I got an apology

Just a note to anyone buying a used car from these idiots, there should be a little white sticker (disclaimer) on the top left hand corner of the windscreen (in very small print) expaining that the HPI will be added to the final invoice, EH salemen assume that you won't have read this and try their luck, however if you read it, it does say that HPI is recommended but optional.

Play them at their own game, I got the muppets to write allsorts on my order form in order to get the sale, obviously as this forms part of the contract of sale they have to honour it, so when I picked it up and the stonechip, scrape, mark, wasn't polished out / professionally sorted, when the mark on the roof lining wasn't cleaned off etc etc and all of the other petty stuff I got the salesman to agree too, I became the customer from hell, a thorn in their side to make them wish that they'd never met me!

I'll teach em to try and rip me off - even if it is through shear annoyance factor

It generally all gets sorted aswell, and you get a pretty good car - if things arn't going your way pay them a visit on a Saturday, and make sure that you are overheard by prospective customers airing your grievances, the soon agree to resolve any issues once a couple have walked off!

I am not a fan of car dealers they think that they mostly think they are a cut above and that all customers are thick and fair game - Evans Halshaw are not on thier own with dodgy practices.

Arnold Clark were pretty shady with some of their practices, mainly agreeing to a value for my part ex (well below glasses guide) then insisting on a vehicle inspection of my px (after I had signed the paperwork) and then telling me that they were reducing the value of there offer due to a general wear and tear items being worn (tried to knock £1000 off a £4000 px for brake pads, exhaust rusty etc etc) told them to stick the deal up the preverbial - they eventually backed down, I still got £4K for my part ex, and they got my new car back regularly for every petty squeak, rattle, I could find (stuff I wouldn't have normally bothered about) I could see that 'wish we'd never sold him that' look everytime I entered the dealership!

Stoneacre - 'We don't sell you a car, we sell you a deal' These are another bunch of numptys - sales man trys to flog you a car based on how much you want to spend per month hoping that you wont read the small print (again) and see that you actually paying a massive APR, Didn't buy a car from these guys in the end, as I couldn't get them out of the above mentallity they seemed to think that I was an idiot that couldn't do maths!

If you don't want to go through the above rubbish stick to local family owned businesses

Lawtons of Tadcaster for those of you in the North are a very good family run Main Ford Dealer - excellent service, no rubbish, no one trying to up-sell or rip you off well worth a visit if you don't fancy taking on the national groups!
  • I went into EH at the weekend at they were the only dealer within 60 miles with the exact car and model i wanted. Went out for test drive, everything fine, was happy enough with value of p/ex as i can't be bothered to sell private.
BUT when going through the deal, these fees came up, Hpi £49.99 x 2.
One was to check my car and the other unbelievably was to check the car they were selling me.
Main problem with this for me, was the car i was buying was obviously a p/ex because of the year etc. So i presume they had already charged the previous customer this fee and were still trying to charge me.
I bluntly refused and all i managed to get off was one fee.
Told them not interested and walked away.
They have since rang me 3 times a day, presumably to see if i still want car....er no ta as i am not paying fees.
Even if they offered to waiver them they can still do one for the sheer principle of it.
