Oil & filter change

Not sure about this one though. Cheap oils contain far fewer detergents & can be one of the causes of deposit/sludge build up.
That is why you only leave it in for a short while, it acts a bit like a flush and a lot of the crap in the engine gets picked up in the oil, you then change the oil and filter again and put in your usual choice of decent oil.
The reason for using a cheap oil is that you have no intention of using it for a long time, but the crap that would darken your new oil is removed with this process.
If you speak to an engineer it is a well used way to get rid of crap inside an engine where serviceing has been sporadic, without the risk of loosening bits after using a flush oil.
As far as using ATF, I have heard about this when the issue was noisy hydraulic tappets, but my concern would be the same as flushing oil, that bit would get loosened by the ATF and then end up in your oil a few weeks after the oil change.0 -
If you are going to be keeping the car a while then I can strongly recommend a Fumoto valve - essentially a ball valve that replaces the sump plug.
First heard about them on a scooby forum, bought one a little skeptical, but very impressed no probs in over 80K and 4yrs, now running 2 on mine and OHs, converted my dad as well.
They are made in japan - very well engineered, i got mine from USA via ebay
Lets you drain oil hotter so its quicker as it replaces sump plug then sludge will drain out. and can now do this without getting hands dirty (still cant get filter off without spilling a bit), best £15ish i spent.
Oil change now about £20, £4 filter, £15 oil Semi-synth 5w30, one glove, takes 15mins (of which 10 is waiting for sump to fully drain - time for a cup of tea.
Of interest last time i was in BandQ they had comma oil (i think) at quite a good price0 -

I looked at them, but always thought I'd probably rip it off on a speed bump, and then dump all the oil in the road.
I just burn my fingers, usually drop the sump plug in the oil tray, then have to wait for it to cool down to get it back!0 -
I was worried about that but by all accounts their fairly robust, on one of the aussie forums there were some potos of one after a direct rock strike off road, the sump gave way first.
But i take your piont on low car deoending on position its a consideration0
