Oil & filter change

If you book online you get 10% off that price. That's what I did last time. Includes decent castrol oil as well. At that price it's not worth the mess of doing it yourself, unless you already have one of those pumps and can be bothered. And are prepared to get covered in the stuff and take the waste oil to somewhere to get rid of it legimitately etc etc...
National Tyres also do vouchers in the national papers, and you can print them off from their website. And they also give you a nice little report with all your tyre tread depths as well.
I look on an oil change as an internal service, and I am convinced that regular ones were the main reason why I saw 123,456 miles go past on my old Mondeo.
I also agree about oil flushes for very old cars, but had one done with the first change on my new Fiesta, as the stuff in there looked like treacle. The plan is to flush it again with nice new oil every 6 months/6,000 miles. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
If you flush the engine at every service from new then a flush is a good idea, but as TiTHEREV says to do so on an older car with dodgy history can cause all kinds of muck to be brought out from hiding. Subaru main dealers used to do a flush as part of a normal service, and I have owned two Subarus from new and they did the same with both.
If you are really concerned then do an oil change with a cheap oil, run it for a few weeks, then change the oil and filter again with decent oil.
This way some of the crap will be removed, but the risk of breaking any chunky bits loose is avoided.0 -
Dose of ATF Fluid works well for a flush...0

I've always had a flush when having an oil & filter change regardless of the age of the car & It's never caused any problems, usually the car runs better.
Anyway, cancelled National as they telephoned me this morning saying it would be a week before they had magnatec oil in  I think they were hoping I'd say no worries, I'll have the premium oil instead. Have decided to take the car to a local garage instead.0 -

Totally agree with this. On some older engines the only thing keeping them leak free is the build up of deposits. If you are really concerned then do an oil change with a cheap oil, run it for a few weeks, then change the oil and filter again with decent oil.

Not sure about this one though. Cheap oils contain far fewer detergents & can be one of the causes of deposit/sludge build up.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Do you include women drivers in that?, and how many people have the correct tools, ie Filter wrench, sump plug key (Fiats) etc, etc, or have the strength to change a wheel? or axle stands.. (silly me fell for the troll)
I got breakdown with my 4x4, DH said if it wouldn't have come with the car he would have told me to get it, as trying to jack up & change such a big wheel would have been difficult [STRIKE]impossible[/STRIKE] for me.0 -

Put a cheap diesel oil in, they're full of detergents.0 -
Oil change? Servicing? Why bother bought my car with 8000 on clock and the only servicing i ave had done is timing belt at 100, 000 miles. Oil is self changing due to a leak uses about 2 litres every 8000 mies Asda value does the trick.
Apart from tyres, brakes and a new back box (back box was only tis morning) I have done nowt else- 188960 miles.
Do I need to get timing belt done at 200000miles or is that just one of those things you need to do when the car is new? (100000 miles)0 -

Good job there's a bypass valve in the oil filter.0
