Oh yes they can they did one for me a few years ago on a focus and the "mechanic" forgot to put the sump plug back in and wondered why it was taking so much oil to get it up to max on the dipstick. He covered the floor with oil :rotfl:
Then when i drove off about a mile later wondered what the scraping noise was .He hadnt put the under engine cover back on properly.I didnt go back to them ever again

I do it myself now its the only way you know its done properly

in the early 70's when my dad had a scrapyard he asked one of the lads to top the oil up in one of the waggons, he watched him from the office window going back and forth between the garage and the truck but thought nothing of it until he jumped in the truck and tried to start it, the stupid idiot had filled the engine to the brim!!!:rotfl:
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • You mean.....people actually get oil and filter changes done for them??
If you cant do that yourself you shouldnt even be driving a car.
I suppose they call out the RAC or AA to change a tyre too?
Good grief. I'm 60- odd and still do most of the servicing etc on our cars.

It's not always the point of being too lazy to do it yourself. Some people don't have anywhere off road to do it.

I know for sure I ain't laying at the side of the road draining oil out the sump. :rotfl:

    Well done big man!

Some people just dont have the time and inclination to do a filter change themselves, and unless you are very confident you wont cross thread the filter/sump plug, or put the incorrect oil in, can get the car to a position to drain it sufficiently and can dispose of the waste oil safely it's far easier (and from a come back point of view) to take it to a good garage & then they can give the car a check to see if there are any issues that you may not have noticed/prevented yourself.

  • For some people, not having to change the oil themselves is a mark of achievement in life.

"My days of having to roll around under the car at the weekend are over, thankfully."

I do an intermediate oil change on my diesel from above using a vacuum extractor pump, but take the car to the dealer for an annual service.

Do you include women drivers in that?, and how many people have the correct tools, ie Filter wrench, sump plug key (Fiats) etc, etc, or have the strength to change a wheel? or axle stands.. (silly me fell for the troll)
  • ...How does a vacuum extractor pump deal with sludgy deposits and extracting the oil from the filter?...

I just change the oil and let the garage do the filter at the annual service.

Ford say the oil should last 12,500miles, so my intermediate change is extra to the service schedule anyway.

I might be old-fashioned, but diesels were always said to be harder on oil, and mine has a turbo, so making it last 12,500miles is stretching it a bit.

Opinions vary about vacuum pumps and sludgy deposits.

Some garages use pumps all the time, although I imagine the workshop tool has a lot more suck than my hand-operated one.

Smart cars have no sump plug, so you have to use a top sucker.

Many marine engines are only emptied from the top because they are mounted in such a way as to make access to the sump plug all but impossible.

should you get a flush done each time you get the oil and filter changed?

I'm a girl, haven't a clue:p. Just wondered as its an optional extra with National.

    No need.

Most cars on the road never get a flush in their lifetime.

Regular oil and filter changes are a very good idea, and are all the car needs in that respect.

An engine flush can quite often do more damage than good on older cars.
