VIRGIN BROADBAND: new deal £9.99 Inc eve/w/e phone calls

Just found this ,any comments?
Virgin bundle 3
Up to 1 Mbps
3 GB monthly download allowance
Free activation
Free modem
Free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines

Am already on Virgin option2, @ £14.99 per month, only difference I can see is that this is a 12 month contract, plus free evening and w/e phone calls,(how does that work? through the computer?).

I saw something about that yesterday so did a little investigating. Seems Virgin have been bought by NTL and people are now having lots of problems e.g. losing their connection regularly. I'm not sure whether to risk it or not.

You would pay Virgin for your home phone calls (in a similar way to Talk Talk etc) instead of paying BT.

The 1Mbps speed isn't particularly fast though (it's roughly twice the speed as normal dial-up)

Having said that though , I've been with virgin for a few years now...they recently upgraded my line to 8Mb , and I'm lucky if I get 0.5Mb in the evening now...

So I certainly wouldn't recommend them.....especially not if you're tied to a 12 month contract

Virgin.net was always run by NTL. Firstly via a joint venture with the Virgin group, then they took full ownership several years ago.

I'd expect it to be rebranded Virgin media with the rest of group next year

I've been with them for just over a year and they have been very good.
  • I am also with virgin and have found them to be pretty good. I am on the option 2 @ £14.99 per month with no contract. I am permanantly connected and in the last 3 months have been disconnected once. I can get upto 8mb but due to my distance from the exchange i can only receive 1mb. I have contacted BT to find out if our lines will be upgraded to accept faster speeds, but their reply was, " sorry, no plans to do this."

I find virgin reliable. Can't say fairer than that.

i am still looking into using one provider for all three:confused:

    i don't download anything

my calls are mostly international(Pakistan saudia arabia and new york)

can anyone recommend which provider is best for me?

    thanks

i have used virgin dial up in the past and have their mobile for mrs.

i find them reliable and customer service has always been very good:D

    you are on!

  • I joined virgin about seven weeks ago under their 'free' broadband deal when you subscribed to their 15 pounds a month sim only mobile. I was on an upto 8mbps speed connection and it was truly awful. It was blisteringly fast (7mbps) in the morning but that was no good to me as I had to go to work. In the evening when I wanted to use it was between only 0.175 and 0.335mbps. It was unusable for activities like gaming. Apparently this was down to contention-too many people were using the bandwidth.

Having spent about a twelve quid (20p per min) on their technical help I eventually agreed to cap the 8mb speed down to 2mb. This has solved all the problems and the connection is now solid at 1.8mbps which is fast enough for me.

I'd now rate their service as good (especially as it is free) but would rate their technical help as inconsistent.

Ok so somebody please clear this up for me? According to this link:

    http://www.virgin.net/internetaccess/compare/

There is no "option", "plan" or "bundle" numbered 2, that costs £14.99 and has no 12 month contract, whereas posters 'Derrick' and 'the gasman' both say they are on this option 2????? I am confused.

Possible 'the gasman' is on Plan Three seeing as he can only get 1MB?

I am currently on PLAN TWO and it costs £17.99 for (up to) 8MB broadband, no phone calls and no contract.
