Round my way, a view of hinckley point is a selling point.

    Funny old world innit?

That view might seem slightely less attractive if it ever blows up, which is what the missus is worried about.:)

  • Under these circumstances we don't need to worry about IRs rising(no mortgage) and it doesn't matter if it 'drops in price' as it will be a family home and 3 days in a town and 4 days rural seems fine to me

Sounds like you are over complicating matters. Commuting costs money, time, effort why not just get a fixed rate mortgage. Markets also trade rates I believe though I know nothing of it, I guess its related to bond prices

The most mainstream safest practical investment I think of right now is a fixed rate presuming a good one is available and that the person can commit for 5 to 10 years

well after a few posts, it seems there are no obvious fallacies to this plan so I must assume its quite a good plan. Simply because some of the users on this forum are so sharp, and their logic and anlaysis so impeccable, that they can spot and destroy a bad plan/ argument in seconds. In my case/ my plan, no such forceful arguments have yet surfaced so I have no choice but to conclude that its a good plan, until such time as one of the more intelligent types here(and there are many) pull it to bits.

    that's what I find funny.

on this side of the bristol channel, a view of hinckley point goes hand in hand with a lovely sea view and hence a premium on house prices.

there are places on the south wales coast which are closer to hinckley point than places in the same county as the plant yet over here no one even considers it as a risk.

a bit of water makes a big diffeence

Thanks dave but I'd rather not, my bro lives in whitchurch near cardiff. so I go there regular, I simply couldn't live in wales, no chance.(er no offense to the welsh)

Oh :(.....and Cardiff isn't even in Wales, by some Welsh standards!:rotfl:

You mention a child. Are you going for home education, two schools or....?

    And ....
When the SHTF happens and it will, wether its a bond or soveriegn default, silver and gold coins won't feed my child. A house with 3 acres of livestock, vegetables and fruit, will.
are you envisaging just very high prices, or a total breakdown in supply?

I have land veg, fruit and animals, but I also harbour a nasty suspicion that my neighbours might help themselves in a real crisis!
    Have you solved that one?

That might seem logical in the short term but inflation and interest rates move cyclically over long periods, 15-20 years, in the 1970s IRs were at 18% in a stagflationary enviroment, which is what we are heading into now. within 5 years I expect IRs to be in double figures

I'm starting to like you alot, you talk sense and pose challenging thoughtful questions:)

the childs only 2 so no panic, she can do preschool 1 day bridgewater, 1 day at home, later home school if required. As for collapse/or inflation. either or both is possible/probable, best to plan for all eventualities imo. if your really worried buy a shotgun;)

Except that you would be breaking the law: to run a betting business you need a gambling license. And since you were trading as a gambler, you would be liable for both income tax and gambling tax on your profits, which would be 100% of your income, since of course you couldn't set aside any of the cost of making the widgets which you gave away free.
I have discovered a source of free widgets.... had a delivery tonight. Free widgets - and I showed the sender photos of how I can turn those free widgets into £20-50 wodgets in just 10-30 minutes apiece :)

You need an island, one you can defend.... it also gives you the option of fishing as well as growing food.

Or, for absolute safety: a spot of land, with mooring rights - and a seagoing vessel. First sign of trouble and you can shove off.
