BRIDGWATER plueeezzeee !!!!!
The Nuclear Power Station at Hinckley Point has been there ever since I was a child, so I wouldn't think it should be a problem (unless you want to live in Shurton or Burton where the houses are overshadowed by the damn thing)
You should look at Exmoor. Much nicer than that Dart place, and only 25-30 miles to Bridgwater.
Thx purch, was hoping you might chip in. The missus got wind of some extensions being built there so its out, we toyed with the idea of buying along the m5 corridor wellington honiton etc but again that limits our search to distance, with this plan we are not limited to where we can buy and can buy in the middle of nowhere, the furthest obscure corner of cornwall, doesn't matter so long as we have the security of a house owned outright with enough land to grow our own food and live cheaply during the difficult inflationary times that are coming. The basic question still remains: is this a daft plan? buying outright and living 3 days in rented where the missus is working or not?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. well yes but I have to strike a balance. financial security is one thing but true security is derived elsewhere also imo . owning your own home outright, in perpetuity, and having the means to feed yourself cheaply(hence the requirment for land) are equally, if not more, important.
I dont understand your argument. True security is holding wealth in a non fiat currency (i.e. Gold and Silver) rather than paper money or in a depreciating asset such as housing. A safe full of gold and a bank full of cash will give you all the security you need. I cant see someone with £200k to £250k in disposible assets struggling to feed himself.
Unless you believe that Gold and Silver have run their course and houses are going to rise in value, I see no logical basis for your plan.0 -

No I don't believe that gold and silver have run their course they have much further to run. For instance I bought 2x monster boxes of silver eagles/maples early 2009 for 13K they are now worth 25k so essentially, as of now, I got one for free. Over the next few years they will double and then double again, I will never sell all my metals. its insurance, but I'm quite happy to deploy some of that profit into other types of security.
At the moment we're renting a beautiful 4 bed in a south somerset village with extensive gardens, summer house etc but no possibility of growing our own food. Anyone that studies the 'just in time' global food chain will realise quite quickly that its a disaster waiting to happen. When the SHTF happens and it will, wether its a bond or soveriegn default, silver and gold coins won't feed my child. A house with 3 acres of livestock, vegetables and fruit, will.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Thanks, the missus doesn't want to live in bridgewater cos of some nuclear power station. she's forever looking at house prices and has spotted some good houses for that price but yes very remote, some in the middle of dartmoor, yelverton 2 bridges etc and we would have to buy a 4x4 but thats what we want, some rundown but I was a builder for 10 years so no probs with that, we can afford to wait for a distressed sale
I can't fault the finding a distressed sale bit, because that's exactly what we sought , but we were careful to buy in a place where others want to live too.
Interestingly, Bridgwater to Yelverton is about 77miles, while Bridgwater to Pontardawe at the other end of the M4 is about 65 miles. Both routes involve motorway/good dual carriageway travel over the majority of the distance. However, there are more properties of your target type and in your price band using the Welsh option....and there's likely to be far more distressed sellers there too. The Swansea hinterland is up against tough times.
I do not work for the Welsh tourist board;), but I was looking in Wales before this place came up. There's no nukes there. The best stuff is a bit beyond Swansea.0 -
We're kind of getting a bit 'off topic' here. I just want to know if anybody can see any flaws in this plan? buying outright as a base/home and then renting in the town the missus is working. 3 days in bridgewater 4 days at home.
At the mo the rent comes in at £850pm, expensive cos its a sought after location, but if we buy outright and then go rent in bridgwater(see you down the pub purch;)) for say £500 we are relatively better off no? Any faults in this plan? I been racking my head but can't think of any. If I missed anything please point it out, ThxHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Thanks dave but I'd rather not, my bro lives in whitchurch near cardiff. so I go there regular, I simply couldn't live in wales, no chance.(er no offense to the welsh)Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Have you factored in the cost of running two houses? Two lots of council tax & two sets of utility bills etc doesn't come cheap. I realise you won't be living in two houses at the same time, so utility bills won't double, but I bet you will spend more than if you only had one home. And then all the other bits & pieces that you will double up with two houses - kettles, cutlery, goodness knows what else.0

Don't blame you, you might bump into Craig Bellamy 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. yes that was something I was considering. council tax being the chief 'fly in the ointment', gas electricity shouldn't be anymore expensive, as you say, but we'd have to furnish 2 houses. The main home would be furnished the best and we could just buy any old rubbish to furnish a rented house. we already have 2 fully kitted out spare bedrooms(double beds etc) where we are now and we have 4 Tvs 3 dvd players and 6 computers so we could just put a set of each in the rented, Cutlery is cheap and if we're renting now at £850, if we go down to £500 in bridgewater (the missus assures me its cheap) then the diff for a month should cover the expenditure on furniture, so it all seems to make sense. can't help but think I'm missing something fundamental tho, that could blow this plan clean out of the water. Hence the the original post and question. Thanks to everyone that has given some input, it is much appreciated.
seems like a good plan tho?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Round my way, a view of hinckley point is a selling point.
