New Washing Machine - not impressed!

What's happened to new washing machines? We seem to have stepped back in time.

I asked for the machine that superseded my recently defunkt machine (a Hotpoint) and not only has this one arrived with too many dials and buttons (WHY do I need SO many choices?!) but also nearly all the programmes are riddiculously over an hour and often 1.5 or over 2 hours long!!

Its a known fact that washing machine users never use more than 3 settings. My last hotpoint had two cycles that were either 45 mins or 56 mins. on a 40 or 50 cycle. So why the change?!

I have normally washing at least 3 loads by now on a Saturday, but only one has been completed. What a total waste of time!! I might as well revert to hand washing, as it would be far, far quicker.

EVEN the rinse cycle is 30 minutes!!!!!!! Why does a rinse need to take 30 mins?! Spin is 16 mins on top of that - which I'm not complaining at.

There is a fast cycle at 30 mins - great, but it won't wash all my children's dirty sports kits clean so can't use it all the time.

This is crazy.

The irony is, this machine is the highest rating economy-wise, and yet I reckon I will now spend more money on electricity as the machine will be running for far longer.

I'm not impressed at all.

Welcome to the modern world where everything is built to be "environmentally friendly" but somehow seems to use more and waste more than before. That means we now don't have lead paint but stuff that doesn't last 1/3 of the time and there is no longer lead in solder which has resulted in billions of electronic devices being sent to landfill because of dodgy connections due to the lead free solder.

    Madness, utter madness.
  • Did you not check the machine before you bought it, i bought a bosch machine that only has like 5 settings and just 2 knobs on it.

New machines are usually cold fill only, the extra time is to heat up the water.

Is that so? I didn't know that... I'm just waiting for a new one to be delivered, and I'll be really annoyed if it is cold fill only!

To the OP - part of the problem is "tick box marketing", which means that if the competition has X programs then Marketing require that all of "ours" have to have X+1 or more, and at least as many features - even if nobody ever uses them...

I'm pretty sure most of the higher rated ones are cold fill. It's one way they get the energy rating up.

If true, it's a bit perverse. It seems ridiculous that I can heat water at about half the cost by using gas instead of electricity, but they don't provide a way to get it into the machine? More madness....

I remember my Mum going to complain after she got a new washing machine because there was no hot water input and it took ages to do a load. She genuinely thought it was faulty. The man in the shop said that the machine is far more economical to run this way
  • Chances are, you're more likely to get a washing machine that is cold fill only nowadays. Even our Beko is cold fill.

I also find the cold fill washers get really gunky with black mould in the dispenser drawer, whereas the ancient hot water fill one didnt. as only cold water goes in there, it never gets cleaned out, so I have to get a sponge and do it manually. :(
