Real life MMD: Should I pay extra for Sky?

No, you hsould not chip in any extra. You lucked in - you didn't actively seek to have it. If you had particularly wanted it, you would have gone in with them and shared the cost when they first subscribe. So, fortune smiled on you - they should be happy for you, it doesn't happen too often!0

If your 'housemates' really are mates surely they are entitled to some compo for letting you share their £120 p.a. each subscriptions.
I'm sure you can work it out but, just for the record, they pay £240 between them and you pay £40 for your Xbox; that's £280 p.a. in total. If you were to share that equally between you it's £93+ each or £7.78 a month. See if they would be happy with you giving them £2 a month each, to take advantage of their multiroom subscription (actually it's £2.22 but they are supposed to be mates!). You would then be paying £88 p.a. and they £96 each. Now that doesn't sound too bad does it - they are getting a 25% reduction and you get SKY on your Xbox for £4 a month?
I suppose it really depends on whether you think you would get £4 a month benefit from your extra Sky viewing.0 -
It's your X-Box membership, I should keep quiet about your entitlement.0

You're already paying for the Sky subscription, which is over-priced for a service where you have to watch adverts, too. I'd install a good freeview aerial in the loft (or use the one on the roof), drill a few holes and run it to all rooms, cost £100 or so, if nothing special is required for the installation. Voila! 'Multiroom', working freely on the principle that a signal already being sent all over costs nothing to the sender to receive on multiple boxes. Sky being Sky call it 'Multiroom' and charge you more even though this is unnecessary and inflexible. The sports can be had down the pub - unless you're hardened alcoholics, it's probably cheaper and definitely more sociable...
Anyway, IF you need multi-room to have it AND it's any good, split the first £10. If not, tell your flatmates to be more petty on the details of their research and less on you! You're contributing, at least. To something that could be better value, too...0 -
Hi, just thought it would be worth mentioning that Comet do the gold xbox live membership for only £29 if you reserve online and pick up at your local store.0

Ok lets get some facts straight first:
As a couple of other people have already mentioned, When you subscribe to Sky's services, you get access to SkyPlayer (to access LIMITED channels and on demand content on a PC/Mac) and if you also have an XBox and XBox Live Gold you can use the service on your XBox as well.
With Sky player you only get around 10 basic channels (unless you have a subscription to sports/movies on your main Sky account I think). And even then, not all programs are available all the time.
This addition service is FREE for ALL Sky subscribers regardless of whether or not you choose to have multi-room access.
So ALL housemates have access to this feature by having their communal subscription. However, I believe only one person can use it at a time.
The other housemates choose to pay extra for multiroom. However they have their own decoder boxes and have ALL the channels that they have access to with their main communal subscription.
So the bottom line is, why should the OP pay for something they all get for free just because the other housemates want something extra? If the OP does pay anything, I would expect them to pay a lot less than the others as they will have a much more limited service than the others.
The XBox Live Gold argument is irrelevant as I assume the OP would pay for it anyway and the others don't have any/much benefit from it as technically each 'user' needs to have their own Gold subscription anyway.
Although I'm sure they sometimes make use of the XBox itself.0 -
Ignore those who say you shoupd pay, as the three (or so) people who have previously stated sky player is free if you already subscribe to sky, so accessin it on your xbox is free. As the other three have stated i know from expreience as i use live, sky and sky player.
Multi room is so you can hav a box in different rooms if you dont have one why should you pay for that service.
As someone else has pointed out though if you dont have unlimited internet then maybe you should make a contribution towards that for your use of the bandwithMoneySpendingExpert0 -
Sky player is free if you a Sky account. It can be used on up to 4 units but depending on your package (i.e. sports & movies) it will have less channels than your Sky box. One of these 4 units - can be e.g a PC, laptop, ipad or xbox to connect. I suspect many students use their parent's Sky player accounts to have Sky at Uni.
From what I understood, if you want to use an Xbox as a mechanism to view Sky Player it will only work if you have a Xbox Live Gold account.
I have no idea whether you can watch the same number of sky channels via Xbox or via a PC. It may be different in different Venues. Check with the Sky web site or visit a local PC games stall (they may know!)0 -
Why should you, if it wasn't for you paying your way to the main installation in the lounge, they would either have to pay half each instead of a 3rd or they wouldn't have any Sky never mind multiroom.0

No, as they get all the benefits of multiroom, you only get sky player which has very limited channels.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0
