Real life MMD: Should I pay extra for Sky?

  • My understanding is that the £10 a month is essentially the cost of the extra Ski decoder in each of your housemates' rooms. Since you don't have an additional decoder you shouldn't split the whole amount.

I'd say the fairest solution is probably to treat the first £10 as the 'cost of multiroom' and anything else as the 'cost of the additional box'. So each of you pay £3.33 each for the cost of 'multiroom' and your flatmates pay an additional £5 each for the extra box. Then you're giving them a contribution, but not subsidising their extra decoders.

Having said that, you're talking about £3 a month so the least controversial thing to do is just take the hit and split it equally.
  • If the Xbox gold thing is something that is used (not just usable) by everyone, then everyone should chip in to it. If it's something that only you can use, then it's irrelevant. If your housemates want to use a service that you're providing (access to better/more games, avatars and such), then they should pay towards that.

If you're offering this service to them free of charge, then I think it's fair that they let you access Sky free of charge too. You could suggest that if they want you to pay for Sky, then they have to pay you for Xbox Gold. If they don't get to benefit from Xbox Gold, then it's fair that you pay towards Sky.

If you want to benefit from someone else, then it's only fair that you help them out in some way. Otherwise you're just freeloading. Tit for tat and tat for tit.
  • Absolutely pay the extra for sky. Your gold subscription doesn't entitle you to watch sky player, merely access to it. As you are now benefitting from the required multiroom you should pay for it.
  • The maximum contribution you should make is £3.33/month

This is calculated on the following basis:

Sky Multiroom costs £10/month for one user. This is the minimum requirement to ensure free access via XBOX connections.

If your friends insist you make a contribution, they too can have Sky in their room for less if they went out and bought an XBOX and paid for XBOX live. It’s their choice if they wish to do this.

On the basis that everyone had an XBOX and XBOX Live connection, this would only require one payment to sky of £10 per month. Therefore, splitting three ways = £3.33/month.

Discounting the XBOX Hardware (Circa £90) and XBOX Live (Circa £30) this would cost each friend around £120 on an annualised basis which is more than the contribution.

Your flatmates sound really petty, as it is a free service then there is no way they should be asking you to contribute. It’s not costing them anymore and from the sounds of it, you wouldn’t be willing to pay for it if you weren’t getting it for free. If I was in their shoes then there is no way I’d be asking for cash, pathetic!

However if you wish to play the game (excuse the pun!) and keep the peace, I’d offer to chip in a extra fiver a month (as a good will gesture).

Why tell them in the first place?

    That's the mistake :D

Yeah it seems fair to share the cost (at a maximum of the £10 it'd cost on its own) if you benefit from it, or promise not to use the Sky app. Conversely, as people have said, if they use the XBox they should share the subscription to that.
  • Why should you pay extra? Your getting Sky with your Xbox is not costing your housemates any more, and if you didn't take it on they wouldn't pay any less. The fact that you benefit because they've already got it in-room is irrelevant to them.

I'm sure you're not already charging them to use your Xbox, and I'm sure they haven't offered. Their wanting you to chip in is simply basic human greed, begrudging someone else from getting a perceived freebie that they cannot get as well.
  • Get a life - forget Sky, Xbox and television - looking through the listings week on week I find that there is virtually nothing that is going to improve my sanity or knowledge by watching. I dont NEED to know what is happening in a fictional place called Albert Square and their disfunctional families, ditto all the other soaps and serials. Entertainment .. I think not. Depressing more like. In the last 4 months I have watched about 6 hours of TV and dont miss it at all. Try it. And I am not a boring *"!*%" . Perhaps if you stopped watching TV you wouldnt have anything to discuss in the office/with friends, how sad.
  • Unfortunately, in these situations, if 2 of them want to pay and you try to argue against it, no one else is really going to stand in your corner and say its unfair. You might find it makes life easier if you just pay a small amount. You can also ask for something towards the xbox gold package, and if they aren't willing to pay, threaten to get rid of it (that's assuming they wanted you to get it in the first place).

If your xbox is in a communal room, then things are different. You're not benefiting personally from the sky multi-room and shouldn't be expected to pay.

I live with 2 housemates and we all chip in paying for Sky TV in the lounge.

OK, so you all chose to have Sky.

They also pay an extra £10/mth each to get it in their bedrooms.

So they have chosen to pay £10 extra per month to enjoy it in their rooms. I guess you were happy watching it in the living room, so didn't feel the need to fork out?

Microsoft have now added Sky to the Xbox, which you can pay £10/mth for, but it's free if you’re already a Sky multiroom subscriber.

But you're not a Sky multiroom subscriber, are you?

As my housemates pay for multiroom, I can benefit from the deal. They don’t think that’s fair, yet I already have to pay £40 a year for Xbox Gold membership.

Do you have to pay £40 per year for your Xbox Gold membership or have you chosen to, much like they have chosen Multiroom?

    Should I pay extra?

    Yes!
