That is defeatist and a backward step. More efficient laundry procedures are the way forward, not descending into filth. Too many people have abominable personal hygiene as it is.

I think that you will find that too much use of deodorants/anti bacterial products can contribute to more and more people with allergies!

I shower daily, change underwear daily, bedlinen & towels are washed weekly. When I was at work I would rotate 3 suits so that the suit I wore on Monday would be hung up and worn again on Wednesday etc etc etc - then suits washed/drycleaned every 3 weeks. Again, work shirts worn in the same manner - unless very hot/or had been exposed to people smoking (yeugh!). In the evening, change into dog-walking/comfies - which I would wear for about 4-5 days. OH would do the same. We never wore anything in bed - so no nightwear to wash (apart from when we were on holiday :D)

Children would have clean underwear/socks daily, clean shirts daily, clean pjs every couple of days.

You can make too much of a good thing!

A child I knew put on clean pants every day but didn't take the others off, so Friday equalled 5 pairs!!
Clean underwear evey day, but surely other items depend on various circunstances.

I guess I am a nomination for the skanky award then.

Underwear - yeh daily - although this is more cos the mrs washes it than I think its necessary.

Work shirts - again daily - although some might stretch to a second day if the day in question was a 2 hour meeting and then back home to change.

Suits - Dry clean maybe after 20 or 30 wears. Dry cleaning a suit is £10 a shot and as the jacket is hardly ever on it doesnt need it. Have 4 suits alternated so they all get a nice airing on the days off. Trousers get the old sniff test - usually in front of the mrs as she get wound up by it no end.

Casual stuff - ie combats - can be worn for months at a time. A couple of years ago I had one pair of shorts go from March until October without a wash and were on daily.

I shower at least once a day in winter, twice in summer and have to say we wash and dry far too much.

so it would be better to wear dirty clothes? If you want to then fine but thats not something I am willing to do.

no it wouldnt be better to wear dirty but wash after one is excessive on the enviroment etc.

It has been known for me wear the same jeans/trouser for 2 weeks without washing, I wash daily and shave every other day or once a week. as for undies only got 3 pairs so i go commando for about 3 /4 times per week. socks not changed until they can stand up on their own :rotfl:
  • I always used to wash clothes after every use, but I have changed my washing habits now. Goes something like this:

Undies - two clean pairs a day, tho depending on how often I shower ( I generally shower in the evening as too short of time in the morning so clean pair when I get up and then clean pair after shower) bras couple of wears before washing, clean socks every day. Same for OH and DD.

Everything else gets at least 2 wears out of it, unless it gets dirty, apart from DD school tops, clean one each day. Her school cardi will last all week unless something has been spilt on it. Am having to wash her coat weekly at the moment because she can't seem to keep it clean! OH is a builder, so clean tops daily, but his jumpers and trousers last all week as they are only going to get dirty again!

Our evening wear can last all week unless something gets spilt on it. Its only on for a couple hours a night.

We each have a towel and they get washed once a week in winter as they hang on radiators to dry, they get washed more in summer so they are not hanging around damp. Bedding gets washed once a week, although my DD likes to lie in at weekends (thought that only happened once reached teenage!) so sometimes if she is not up in time hers won't get changed.

Any dresses I have that I really do not like to wash, I will hang up to air instead of washing. I have some dresses that I have never washed. I have one dress that has been in the bottom of my washing basket for well over a year, really should take that back out again as I don't think its going to get washed now!

I agree and personally I don't usually find that something like jeans or a jumper gets dirty after one wear, unless you spill something on them or whatever. I change underwear and socks every day and usually my top only lasts one day, but other stuff can last a lot longer.

With four of us, including two young children, we usually have a load of washing most days, and that's only washing things that really need it. If I washed everything we wore after one wash, I dread to think how many loads of washing I would have to do.

I read in the sunday paper yesterday a stat that a large majority of women only wash their bras a couple of times a month. I found that disgusting and think at times I am a bit of a grubber for not washing mine after every wear. Every time I read on here of people who wash them in the sink every evening so they are clean for the following day it puts me to shame as mine go in the washing machine (sorry blue_monkey :o) in a pillowcase.

As for washing other things I suppose it depends on what the clothes are made of. I wash work clothes daily as I often wear poly mix trousers but if I wore jeans to work I might be less inclined to wash them daily.

    This thread is just facinating!

I live on my own and very rarely have "drop in visitors" (family is all over the country and my closest friend lives 6 miles away so they always call to see if i'm in) so my wearing and washing routine is quite easy.

Typically, each week, i wash :-

5 - 7 sets of undies (lounging on weekends means i rarely get dressed at all)
5 - 7 pairs of socks (see above)
    5 work tops
    1 pair of work trousers
1 set of jammies (i don't sleep in these i just wear them around the house)
    1 set of bed linen
    1 set of towels

That's it. One load of washing per week

Obviously there is more if i have gone out anywhere after i get home form work or if me and the OH go out anywhere but most of the time i walk through the door after work, have a brief shower (washing my hair every other day) and then snuggle down in some jammies. My firends are more than used to me in that attire if they are to turn up!

I have only ever done 1 jeans wash every 3 months or so since i was about 18 and really huge jeans were the fashion for rockers at the time, they took ages to dry!! Unless they are stained or can make their own way to the washing machine, my jeans get worn to death and then washed in one go, dried over the aired for 24 - 48 hours and then thrown in the tumble dryer for 30 minutes to loosen them up.

Not dirty, just econimocal. I got a huge box of washing powder from the cash and carry in Sept last year and there is still half of it left.
  • wow, i'm pretty skanky apparently!

underwear is changed daily, but with most of my other clothes it's just down to the 'sniff test' (love that phrase, lol to whoever posted it!).

apart from jeans. I used to be a ska/punk/metlar and never used to wash jeans! why would you, they just get more comfortable with each wear! nowadays i wash my jeans every .... few months. :O
