to BT or not to BT

The difference is that if the problem lies in your internal cabling and BT come out and find that you'll be stiffed with a bill for over £100.

Do you have any extensions? If so they are a possible source of noise so eliminate them entirely by removing the faceplate on your master socket and connect just using a filter to the inner socket. Record all the stats then check again with your normal setup. If the stats vary significantly then there is a problem with your wiring rather than the line itself.

Some assistance with that and phone wiring optimisation for ADSL - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

I have already removed the faceplate from the wall socket and connected the filter to the inside socket by orders from TalkTalk Indian Tech support. The speed difference was... well, there was no change.

The wall socket is in my living room, which means the cable trails from underneath the radiator (yes, that's where the socket is), over 2 doors (1 door is a cupboard where the boiler tank use to be, and the other is the entrance to the hallway), before going under the stairs, out through the door frame, round the communal stairwell and out through the streets to a switch box (those green boxes at the side of the roads which you tend to see BTOpenreach workmen dealing with) 500metres away despite there being a switch box immediately outside.

I know it's 500 metres away because when my phone line was connected, the Openreach bloke connected a device to my wall socket which sent a signal down the line. It said on the device that the signal is travelling just shy over 500 metres.

Regardless of which ISP you choose, it will still be BT OR who fix (eventually) any physical line problems.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Sadly, don't have cable in my town. The nearest place that does as far as I know is Sheffield.

I got your email, ran tests and then responded to your email saying that I still don't have 2.4Mb.
  • Well, it looks like TalkTalk have stopped trying to help me again, as evidenced in this thread. However, no matter how much fake help they give me, I'm still going to switch when the time comes.
