I actually considered writing, "If you do an episiotomy without obtaining my written consent I will sue you for assault." but I decided it might be a little too antagonistic and OTT.
Tbh I don't think it's too OTT susan if I end up having a hospital birth I will possibly use that phrase as when I went in with my sister in May she had specified "does not want an episiotomy unless it's an emergency" (something along those lines) and they still gave her one - she had had an epidural and they waited until my mum had left the room (she was the one who knew the specific instructions - I had no idea) and they did it without even telling her  She thought she was just being examined (her legs were already in stirrups as she was pushing):happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -

Did they explain why they did it? My first thought was maybe it WAS an emergency but I understand that in some cases staff just don't understand or read the notes in the birth plan. I would certainly want to know why they'd gone ahead and done it if it wasn't an emergency, if it had specifically been written in the notes to be performed in the case of an emergency only.
Although, saying that I would hope that if it was indeed an actual emergency, that they went ahead and did it with me, not spend time explaining what they were about to do and why.0 -
I had an episiotomy with my first baby. I don't recall specifcally being asked if it was ok, but I was in need of an assisted delivery (ventouse) so maybe that's why they didn't feel the need to ask?Olympic Countdown Challenge #145 ~ DFW Nerd #389 ~ Debt Free Date: [STRIKE]December 2015[/STRIKE] September 2015

I was in the room at the time and they honestly didn't mention that they were about to do it. There were 4/5 people in the room having discussions amongst themselves but no consultation was given. Surely when an 18 year old girl is having her first baby they should give some consideration at least to explain what they are about to do and the reasons why unless, it was a true emergency.
Tbh my local hospital is awful which is why im hoping for a homebirth but if I end up there I will be very explicit on my wishes and make sure that OH is briefed on them.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0
