Could any mothers advise please?

I have a small problem. My OH's father turns 60 this year and has alway dreamed of spending it in Spain with all his family. Last year he booked 2 big villas in the south of Spain for October this year for all the family. It's a lovely gesture on his behalf and we have known this is what he wanted to do for years now. The problem is this I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and am due in mid August. I have no idea of how I will feel and whether I will be up for taking a very young baby to Spain 2 months later. Has anyone ever gone on holiday with a very small baby before? How manageable is it? Will it be okay for the baby? Will it be the last thing in the world I want to do?
I'm not necessarily a people pleaser but he has been looking forward to this for so long and the villa is booked already. I can't currently tell anyone as I'm STILL waiting for a date for my scan date

I'd go happily - when they are young and not moving about is the easiest time to get away with young babies - plus there are lots of willing hands to give you a break just when you feel really tired.

Unless there is any reason (like awful family politics etc) why it would be a difficult time without a baby to consider, I'd definitely go. In fact, we are planning a family holiday for when our (second) baby is about that age, because it worked so well going away with the first one.

Im not a mum yet but went on holiday a few years ago with my friend and her daughter who was 3 months old at the time. We had a fab holiday, baby was fed during take off and landing to prevent popped ears and slept most of the time in her pushchair quite happily.
It was much easier than when we went the following year and her daughter was 17 months old!

You'll be fine. Just make sure you plan properly, but don't forget they have babies in Spain too, so anything you forget or suddenly need, you'll be able to get hold of. Having family around with a new baby will mean you get a bit of a break too!

We took DS to France (driving from Manchester to Brittany) when he was 3 months old, to a gite and had a whale of a time.

I think 2 months after the birth will be perfect.

Babies are a dream to travel with at that age, he/she won't be fidgety on the flight and you won't need to take too much. You should be over the birth by then and pretty much back to normal and what a brilliant opportunity for you and your OH to spend some quailty time together with a constant stream of babysitters, bliss. The weather in spain in October should be perfect for baby.

Just get your FIL to check whether the villa can supply a travel cot.

  • I'd go, my baby is 12 weeks and he seems really portable right now, suspect he will be less so in a few months. Also if there are loads of helpful family members there who can take the baby for an hour or so each day the break will do you the power of good. Have a fab time!

I agree with the aboves posters. You will be fine I took my little girl when she was 8 weeks old to meet her family in Egypt.
  • Thanks all - I feel a bit silly now for worrying unnecessarily since the replies have been quite overwhelmingly positive.

Don't feel silly, it's a sensible thing to think about, but you will be fine - enjoy your pregnancy, and your holiday :j
  • I probably wouldn't have dared with my first baby, but took my second baby on holiday to Spain at about 8 weeks old & it was absolutely fine, so I'd advise anyone to do it now. As others have said, a tiny baby is very portable & they do actually travel quite well. Just be organised with the stuff you need to take (you will be able to buy anything you need there, but it may be pricey.)
Spain is a very child-friendly country, you'll be made a great fuss of. I say go for it & enjoy yourself!

I think its different if you feel its been imposed on you - but I always planned to take my baby abroad when she was about 2 months old, so I was happy to do it. It was no trouble at all at that age (different a year later when all she wanted to do for the entire 4 hour flight was stand on my lap and gabble at the folk in the seats in front of me ).

You'll have lots of help and support on a big family holiday abroad, so as long as you're feeling okay, no medical issues (ie caesarian might mean you'll be sore) and baby is healthy, I think you'd really enjoy it.
