recently had broadband and signed up for 1Gb per month but am reaching that in about 10 days,
I don't do a lot on web at the moment except visit here and look for info on products, days out, etc

someone has suggested that as this site has a lot of avatars/pics etc it is transmitting a lot of bandwidth each time I refresh a page

does anyone else have this problem visiting here

  • I have the problem on dial up that the pages take forever to load when there are lots of rolling smillies, pics etc. I tend to avoid the Arms thread for that reason but pics are creeping into lots of threads now when people post a pic of what is on offier. Perhaps a little camera icon would warn people that a pic is on a thread?

Roll on broadband, or perhaps not from what you say

If using Mozilla Firefox click tools, options, web features and uncheck load images.

If using Internet Explorer click tools, internet options, advanced, scroll down to multimedia and uncheck Show Pictures.

You can then choose to view each picture on a case-by-case basis.

Most avatars are stored in you cache however so you shouldn't need to redownload them.

Maybe your temporary internet cache needs increasing?

Goto Tools -> Internet Options.. - > Settings

and increase the amount of disk space used.

IE will download these once onto your hardrive saving your bandwidth from doing over and over - of course if you clean these out often you will run into similiar problems...

If the pictures aren't being downloaded each time and are being saved to the cache then based on each page being 50kb (same as this thread) then you should be able to view about 20970 pages.

Of course there are other things that may be taking up bandwidth: Do you automatically update your anti-virus software every time you go on line? Is your home page set to a website you browse straight past at (e.g. ISP's site or https://www.msn.co.uk) Do you have any e-mails with large attachements?

Sorry can't be of any more help.

  • That could just be ur pc talking to the ISP occasionally making sure it is still there. Your PC will tend to talk to other servers even if you are not using it.

Also remember those figures on network usage are given as Packets, and these packets are typically very small.

I try to avoid broadband with d/l limits. I can use a gig in a day easy =)

Set the Internet Explorer Disk Space to maybe 50 to 100megs?

100kb you had it set on is extremely small, and could be the problem.

100kb would hold about 10 avatar pictures or two pages off these forums.

Depending on your Hard Disk Size I would set it up to 500mb. It might seem a lot but the pictures etc. would load up instantly and it would take a hell of strain off you web connection if you're downloading that much in 5 days.

You can cause a lot of performance problems by having a huge IE cache ..... lets get serious.

For a start 20MB should be a fairly safe bet to start. Keep an eye on the directory to see how much space it takes over a few days. To give you an idea, I have mine set at 10MB and I don't get a lot of itterative downloads.

Having said that, I don't see that ad-hoc browsing as described should put you anywhere near the limit over the course of a month.

Whatever advice you decide to follow, you should try to separate the temp directory and browser caches on a separate drive. This will prevent all the fragmentation performance issues.
