  • What would I do?

I'd pop round and have an informal chat with all of the immediate neighbours in the street, barring the next-door ones, of course. Don't jump to any conclusions yet as you have no idea of the kinds of objections which have been raised.

Do not be tempted to carry on with this purchase regardless just because you have already committed good money to it!

Seriously in-a-stewart, are you actually thinking of going through with this? Don't be so bl**dy stupid, (apologies for the naughty word but this needs to get through to you).

    DO

    NOT

    GO

    ANYWHERE

    NEAR

    THAT

    HOUSE.

If you want any further reasons then simply go and knock on a few of the neighbours doors and ask what happens. I live next door to a fairly bad neighbour and it can be absolute hell, yet yours sounds 20 times worse. Don't get me wrong but if you buy that house then you're a fool. Not only will you soon hate living there but you will have a house that cannot be sold. Please don't do it.

I agree with this, most neighbours would be only too happy to talk to you, and make sure you speak to more than one neighbour. You need all the facts.

Once you've spoken to the neighbours and depending on what they say , I would actually go and speak to the "bad" neighbour as well and just say that you are thinking of moving in to the area and just wanted to know what they thought of it.

It would be unusual for 8 neighbours to all be wrong about a person, but sometimes things get out of hand and can escalate when they needn't have done.

Dont think of losing the solictors money but more the saving in avoiding spending all that money on a house next to a nutter.
    (Quote Mallotum)

Mallotum's giving key advice here: think of yourself saving money in the long run. When we moved into a previous house, the first thing one of the new neighbours did was to pop around to tell us about the neighbourhood nutter we needed to avoid at all costs. How we wished we'd had a heads up before completing on the sale! Thankfully you've been given a heads up so take it for what it is and start looking for another house: you won't feel the same about this new home now and you can't rely on the prospect of any council action -this takes a long time to happen.
Lastly, remember to ask the 'neighbours' question when you start looking for another house!

  • Eight neighbours have written to the council. Not just the ones either side or directly opposite but eight have put pen to paper. Does that not tell you something? If he is still there in X years time when you want to sell who will buy your house? Sure talk to the neighbours but they may play down the problem to help out their friend who is trying to sell ....
  • We are in a similar position.

Viewed a lovely house in a perfect location for us just 2 minute walk from my daughters school. The house is already lovely but has potential and at the price they are selling it for we would be able to do the attic conversion and conservatory.

My dad already lives in the area so asked him to do some digging about the neighbours. Turns out that the one side of the neighbours are lovely and the other side are trouble, in fact the whole family from great grand-parents to children are nasty bullies.

However, my dad says there has not been any trouble there for a while. So we were still considered it and went for a second viewing and deceided to ask the vendors out right they simply said one side are lovely and the others they never see.

On closer inspection on nethouseprices we discovered the house had been sold 3 times in 4 years and now its on again, i thought that was strange and when driving past it the other day there were police outside, turned out they are involved with drugs.

Although its perfect in every way apart from that we cannot take the risk of living next to a neighbour from hell / druggie when we have a small child and plan to have more, so deceided to look elsewhere.

Its such a big risk to take and you dont want to regret it for the rest of your life and you probably wont be able to sell it in future anyhow especially if the council are involved its always going to show in future reports to buyers if you did want to sell.

    Take the hint.

8 complainants about one person means they are a problem.

Or there are a lot of malicious people who'll complain about anyone.

    Either way run.
  • My solicitor said he is going to contact the owners to find out more but basically the letter says a lot of stuff like how he's an antisocial neighbour and is well known in the street to the others who have had to put up with him!! But then again maybe he will be ok with me?!?

If this is an unresolved issue, I would say to steer clear of the house. I know its a shame because of the money, but you do NOT want to be stuck with a bad neighbour. If they're anti social, there is no way they will be nice to you and mean to everyone else. I moved out of a rental property last year after 4 months because of the w****** we lived next to. We did nothing to provoke, but still got abuse every day. We complained to the council (they were council tenants), and they knew of the family but did nothing, I found out that they had been living there for at least 5 years before we were and nothing had been done! You don't know how long these things take to resolve, and if I could offer you advice, I would say don't risk it.
