Urgent help please!! Not sure what to do now!

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm in a total panic and not sure what todo. If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful!!

I found a really nice house and had an offer accepted on it last month, just below the asking price which was a bit of a strech anyway! Everything has been going well since then and I haven't really got involved - I've just let my solicitor do everything as I've never bought any property before and none of it makes any sense to me.

About a few weeks ago he got the form back from the owners of the house with the inventory and other details and in the form they had written that there had been written correspondence with the council recently, so th solicitor wrote to the council and asked what the correspondence was. I thought it might just have been something to do with a complaint about the bins or something but I've just heard back from my solicitor today and basically 8 other neighbours including the owners have written a letter to the council to complain about the bloke living next door to the house I am buying!!! So now I don't know what to do!

There are pages of writing to the council, but it basically "says that he is the most inconsiderate neighbour anyone could wish for""" and "has caused nothing but stress to his neighbours" and is a "law unto himself" so now I'm absolutely terrified!

What should I do!?!?! I don't know whether to just ignore it and go ahead anyway but what if the man next door is a nightmare to live next to? Or should I just pull out? The thing is I have already spent money on the solicitor so far and I don't want to lose my money. I am so stressed!

Help! What should I do?!

Cheers.

You may lose money, but actually this is what you are paying for. There is always a risk that you will end up walking away because of something like this.

Do you know what the council did? Did they take any action as a result of the letters? If so, what? Is the situation still the same, or has it changed? This could be important. If he's been sanctioned in some way it could end up being a dream to live next door to. If not, you need to be careful.
  • My solicitor said he is going to contact the owners to find out more but basically the letter says a lot of stuff like how he's an antisocial neighbour and is well known in the street to the others who have had to put up with him!! But then again maybe he will be ok with me?!?
  • It was a "stretch". Do you want to be next door to some nightmare neighbour, for the rest of your life, because you cannot afford to move?

A few £00s of solicitors money, will be nothing to the £000s it would cost to move again. Or that you might lose on the value of the house on re-sale, as any other buyer would get the same information and assume you to be desperate to get out, so offer you a pittance.

If you are so easy to stress over a few letters, what would you be like after 6 months of the nuisance neighbour...?

Do yourself a favour and walk away. Cut your losses. Chill!

  • Sorry Windham I didn't see your message on here when I was posting.

The letter is only quite recent to be honest and I don't think the council have done anything yet but the point is I can't really wait to see what the council say can I!!? They might takes ages!

Sorry if I'm not making sense, I'm just really worried about it.

I am sure vendors are obliged by law to inform potential buyers about neighbours from hell.
Having said that, what exactly does the person do? Or in other words, what ages/lifestyles/views... are the other 7 neighbours?

For instance, we have a neighbour noone can stand. All she does (wrong, according to other people that live in our street) is talk to her cats and can be a bit chatty if she catches you off guard.

You have to find out what the problem actually is before you can decide what to do.

It would put me off, tbh. Heartbreaking as it is, I'd walk away if I were you. What's a few hundred quid in comparison to however many thousands you'd be spending on the house? Unless the situation's been rectified, I don't see how you can want to live there.

Have the owners filled out the necessary forms yet? They have to declare any neighbour disputes. Would be interesting to know if they've done so...

Well, if I were in your shoes I would drop it and not buy the house.

My recent neighbour is quite irritating to me and 'the other side' (my next door but one) by putting some of her rubbish outside our homes on collection day, they also argue loadly regularly. Neither of us have complinaed to the council at this time. Think how bad it may be at your prospective house if nine people have complained.

Even with the little ignorance I am experiancing, I would not buy my house now if I knew this was going on. I am fed up with ignorant people everywhere I turn. There seem to be no manners anymore, its all 'I have a human right to be as horrible as I like' type attitude. I hate the way we seem to be going.

Dont think of losing the solictors money but more the saving in avoiding spending all that money on a house next to a nutter.
  • Now I'm being put off by what you recommend! But maybe you are right!

I am going to ask my solicitor what their information is and what the owners say! I suppose at least they were honest and told me there had been writing to the council as they could have kept quiet.

I will post again when I know what my solicitor says!!!
