A 47k bottle contains 662kwh*, so you can make some basic assumptions if you compare the kwh price against electricity.

If - for example - you pay 12p/kwh for electricity, then if your bottle costs more than £68 you might as well turn on the fan heaters.

If you pay less than £68, then it's still cheaper to run with LPG.

Of course you need to do the calcs with your own LPG purchase price, electricity rates and boiler efficiency %.

*Your boiler isn't 100% efficient, so you don't get the full 662kwh - I have assumed 85% efficiency, so you get 563kwh
  • thanks to Bob Medley for calorific value which helps to assess prices - bear in mind that price for electricity is per kw HOUR. Today's Northern Ireland prices as follows (just checked). We only have two options Calor and Flogas and I only looked at propane. Calor are 50% more than Flo for the 47kg size (£93 as against £63) however more interesting is the fact that you cannot find prices on Calor's site (I didn't anyway) but they are clear on Flogas'. The variation with size of bottle is from £1.34/kg to £2.50/kg with Flo, equivalent Calor £2.00 to £2.45. These are 'rounded' figures, but you probably get the picture. Delivery is included - indeed it can be the same price even if you collect it. All VAT inclusive. lf you haven't got an empty cylinder of the same spec. (label doesn't matter) ........well , it's more.
  • Contrarily to what I had been led to believe by Flogas' website, when I actually attempted to buy a 47kg cylinder 'refill' I discovered that the price was within .50p of Calor's. As were all the other prices.(£2.00/kg min.). Sorry about the error, their website was out of date.

£93:eek: - that borders on scandalous. Being generous and saying your boiler is 90% efficient, then the cost is 15.6p/kwh (nearly triple mains gas) & potentially more if your boiler is less efficient.

Is your electricity kw/hr rate below this?
  • 47kg LPG bottle in rep of Ireland on flogas website is 120euro
47kg in North Ireland on flogas web is 92£
autogas filling stations in rep of Ireland sells 1 liter of gas for 0.99.9e in NI autogas stations sells it for about 0.70p to 0.74p UK must be simular price.
47kg = 93liters of gas . so, 92£ divide 93L =0.98p per liter . now lets take autogas (0.74p per liter)u will pay 68.82£ to fill up 47kg bottle :) 0.70p per liter u will pay 65.1£ for 47kg i think my calculations are correct;) to fill up the bottle with autogas all u need is to get the right adaptor which is 25£:) on ebay
  • I've just priced a 47kg bottle of propane in the Northdown area of N.Ireland, £97 :eek:delivered and fitted. A total rip off.
