Why stop there, why not have free debt advice that's only available to those with enough debt that bankruptcy's the only option? Clearly they're the ones in need of help...
If people really did have to have nothing before they could claim, I would agree with you. However, you get some help with savings of £16,000 and anything under £6,000 is ignored.
For the majority of people, these are enormous sums of money, certainly not like being left with "nothing" before they can claim.0 -

"So, why did you lose your house in three months, when you could have claimed benefits and made your savings stretch to 6 months while you tried to find work?"
"Oh, I'm much too holier-than-thou to claim benefits. Besides, I hadn't even started eating supernoodles..."
We didn't lose the house. I always worked. We knew absolutely nothing about benefits and even if we had I am sure they wouldn't have been generous enough to pay our mortgage etc back then.
Problem nowadays is that people see benefits as the first port of call rather than attempting to make sure they can look after themselves before the rainy day happens. There are 2 separate threads on the benefits board at the moment where people have inherited tens of thousands of pounds and think they should not have to use this windfall to pay their own way now they have the cash to do so. Different generations have different attitudes and expectations.
And it's not 'holier than thou', it is sensible self preservation to make provision for the unexpected.0 -

Some of you just dont get it do you.
Pardon? I see you are keen to jump on the bandwagon here, but no one here has mentioned anything whatsoever about people with disabilities.. I think you have the wrong thread - the disabilty thread is elsewhere. The opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
Carers allowance and the rest!
That would be like me saying that the government expects me to live on £250 a month DLA when really I get DLA, WTC and my income from employment, totalling about 17k pa which isn't bad for a 24 year old.0 -

On another thread you say you are an Accountant. Surely you could find work from home in this field? So what career are you planning once you have a degree?
I would love to do an OU course but can't afford to, guess it is free for you.0 -
Benefits are the life of riley. You sit and moan about the pittance you get every week. what right do you have to moan? Its FREE MONEY. You should be thanking the tax payers - without whom you would starve - not sitting moaning. Its that attitude that winds up people like me, as we work, pay your bills, and are struggling ourselves, yet have to listen to people who do nothing more than sit on their butt all day - moan about how skint they are!
1)We ALL pay tax, workers or not.
2) If it's so damn easy and so much fun why don't you quit your job and sign on? Go on, don't tell me, it's a moral obligation to work, a point of principle?0 -
Ok you are so keen to get the point of not actually being on benefits that you posted twice just to say so. Your intellect seems like it needs some work due to your repetition and name calling...
You seem confused and are contridicting yourself - what are you talking about wide screen televisions for??
I know you are desperate for sympathy but why would you bring dead or disabled relatives into it? You argument is thin on the ground really - you are just trying to gain sympathy - and there is none to be had here for benefits scroungers.
I don't want sympathy from you or anyone else I was giving an example of a situation where people claim benefits through no fault of their own and don't get enough to live the life of riley you're claiming they do on here.
I mentioned wide screen televisions because generally people who have issues with benefit claimants base this on a stereotype of someone who has a large amount of electrical goods which is reinforced by articles around this theme in the media such as the Daily Mail.
And you posted twice to be abusive about people who are claiming benefits and whinging, a group you lumped me into when I didn't belong there, so I'm responding twice. I'm mimicing your communication so if that shows a poor level of intellect in me what does it say about you?
For the last time I am not a benefit scrounger as you so charmingly put it so I don't know why I'd be trying for sympathy for being something I'm not and to refer to people who get benefits like that is disgusting.
Benefits as a term covers everything from JSA to Income Support to Housing Benefit to Carer's Allowance to Disability Living Allowance and everything else inbetween. If your problem lies solely with the long term unemployed who claim JSA then state that but otherwise you will get people whose experience of benefit claiming is any of the above INCLUDING claiming disability related benefits.
Btw I have noticed that you couldn't actually tackle my points with a valid argument and instead had to resort to making a personal attack on me as an individual. That's cute.0 -

I cannot work from home because I care full time for my husband - proper full time, not 37 hours a week with weekends and holidays off, it can, and frequently is 24/7. Thats why the OU is geared towards people like me, we can do as much or as little as we are able, take a break, restart after a year or two or three. Not that its any of your business but when I qualify I will hopefully still have my husband around to care for but should things worsen and he dies then I plan to work as a bereavement counsellor.
Oh and if youre so jealous of the concession I receive towards OU study why not jump under a bus, that way you too will probably qualify for disability and *all* the benefits it brings.I don't know if I'm getting better or just used to the pain.

God your a piece of nasty work aren't you. You can see she clearly stated she was caring for her sick husband and studying also.
So do you have a sick husband to care for?
Can't believe how rude you were to that lady. :mad:The day I had my Beautiful son is the day everything came together for me. For someone so small he done so much and made me complete.0 -
