just got myself a lottie last Mon, and there's a lot of ivy, bramble willow suckers all over it (full plot). the brambles are a pain to dig out, but the ivy are sprawling all over the ground, on the trees and fencing. I've never used weedkillers before, but I can't be spending all my efforts pulling and digging it all up, so I'm resorting to a faster and more effective solution. as we're still in the dormant season, i'm not sure whether applying weedkiller would work esp. as the leaves are really glossy. could willow treated with this too, or will they have to be dug up??

ivy being evergreen and the weather relatively mild and dry, yes it should have some effect. You will probably need to treat again in a few weeks anyway as more weeds etc start to sprout but if you spot treat each bit with the sprayer now then it will definitely hurt itsquaaaaaaaaacccckkkkkk!!!! :money:0

Be careful with Glyphosate, it makes the soil around the treated plants into a more hostile environment. You will be able to grow plants in it afterwards, but it could take months, or even years before the soil returns to its original state.0

Can you cite some chapter and verse on that, please? I've not heard anything like it before.0 -

Not what you might call an unimpeachable source, though, is it? In fact, downright flaky.
I think I'll reserve judgement until I've seen more.0 -

If you say so.
There have been tons of bits of research on glyphosate - I just picked one out of the air that I saw today. If you haven't seen them - you probably don't want to look.
Monsanto are good at burying bad news...If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
just a whimsy
would one of those weed flame guns do the job?Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

I found out via wikipedia, it cites a paper under "Environmental Degradation". The current link is broken, but you can find it via Google. Whenever I consider using a chemical like that, I like to double check Wikipedia just in case - it could obviously be wrong.
Unfortunately, Monsanto is the whipping boy of every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry in the self-styled 'eco' movement. I treat the ritual slaughter of it and its products with extreme caution, having been around since it was first singled-out for special treatment in a field I was working in at the time.
Sadly, I have been forced to treat Wikipedia with similar caution, since some of its entries have been shown to be have been dominated by activists, much as others are dominated by the commercial interests which police it.
I will do some research on the subject, which I'm grateful for having had brought to my attention, but I'll need convincing by reliable evidence, which I'll see if I can find.0 -

Or perhaps you only want to look at sites that do?
These things work both ways.Sambucus_Nigra wrote: »Monsanto are good at burying bad news...
See my comments in the other reply. Monsanto is a bogeyman to the eco-warriors.0
