Its widespread but not really talked about much.. once they investigate you problem I'm sure they'll come up with ways to help , trouble is women tend to put up with it for years before they do anything so its a case of going through the procedures till they find something that helps . If you find nothing really works insist on being referred on as they don't see it as serious but as I have said a very small surgery fixed my problem completely and I have gotten on with life and forgotten I ever had the problem.

.................OMG my pride won't let me do the Tena. OK if there is nothing else
.I am only 50 years old......................................
    .

Haha! I felt exactly the same! There are other makes available which do the same job but aren't as obvious (same brand as some sanitary towels etc.) Excruciating to buy (reminds me of buying condoms:D) but reassuring to wear in situations where you can't be sure of access to the toilet. A thought: you could order online from Boots.com, free delivery to store and they just hand over a sealed brown box with your purchases in.....

I believe this is an extremely common problem in women of about 50 and older - at least that's what my GP said!:p I wasn't referred to an incontinence clinic, though, he gave me a prescription for detrusitol which has helped enormously.

It is an extremely common problem but I must admit being very surprised that your doctor went straight to medication, you could still get help from a continence clinic though and they tend to be self-referral.

Glad to help and look forward to hearing an update. My continence nurse will be phoning me in a couple of months to see how I'm doing.

Loads of women ( and men) have this problem. The clinic will find out what type of incontinence you have, what makes it worse, like tea or coffee, cold weather, going downstairs, running etc. and then they will give you some choices as to how to be treated. Sometimes kegel exercises will work. The clinic will show you how to do them properly. You may have loan of a pelvic exerciser or you can buy one.
Always Envive pads individually wrapped are light and thin much the same as Tena but in a pretty pink wrap they will keep you dry saving any embarrassing moments and spares can be carried around easily in back pocket or bag.
Hope you get things sorted at the clinic, it's well worth going.

and this is NOT medical advice, because I know there could be many causes, but I read just recently that one of those devices for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is now available on prescription.

Yup, that's the kind of thing I was talking about.

cavework, tena pads, other brands of panti-liners, call them what you like but I'd rather have something available than flood myself!

In fact I'd better consider whether I'd prefer to try to get me and my dodgy arm in and out of an airline toilet, or pad up for a four hour flight ...
