You are very generous with your time - I do appreciate this. Here's my log - I'm fairly non-techie and I don't understand it. I never use IE for example, so don't know why that's showing up. Now I have The Fear that I'm bristling with viruses. I'm looking at Avast right now!

Forget the Celeron for a start. Compare the Athlon II and the Pentium and go for the one with the largest level 2 cache.0

Your version of avg was out of date anyway
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
follow steps 9, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, (and 3 if you haven't done it, Full updated scan, you can do step 3 at the end as it will take a while)
you might need the avg 32 bit removal tool, to cleanup avg completely
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
tick and fix these using hijackthis, they are all in the O16 section

what printer are you using? Kodak networked?
Are you using a pen graphics tablet - there are quite a few processes running constantly relating to this?
if you don't use google toolbar, uninstall it from control panel, add/remove programs
Your XP service pack, and internet explorer is out of date, run a windows update
reboot, note your commit charge figures (before running anything), and post them along with a fresh (updated) hijackthis log!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Right - Closed, you are wonderful.
I didn't bother updating IE as I never use it. I have got rid of AVG and installed Avast (you didn't warn me it was going to talk to me, that's knocked a few minutes off my life with shock!)
yes, I have kodak printer and yes, I have a pen tablet which is touch sensitive so handy for general use/browsing.
On reboot (which seemed a lot quicker already...) my commit charge was 238/1088M
I have done a new hijack this log. But things that I got rid of have come back - like ctfmon. I swear I followed your instructions to the letter.
But anyway - regardless of whether I screwed up somehow - it's all working fine and dandy and I am unspeakably grateful!

did you install cleanmem and minimonitor (step 9 in the instructions)? It should place a percentage icon next to the clock.
do you use google toolbar, if not uninstall
start, run, services.msc
disable these services
O23 - Service: Bonjour Service - Apple Inc. - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe
O23 - Service: Google Software Updater (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
disable these using msconfig, or download autoruns (http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe), (untick them)
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe " -t (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')
still on service pack 2 (Platform: Windows XP SP2), did you do windows updates?
Could you confirm what the physical memory total is in task manager performance?!!

ahh - I did install cleanmem but I don't know about the minimonitor - I think I did but will check.
I can't tell you how many times (over the past year actuallY) I've tried to get rid of Bonjour. Yes I did follow your instructions. i think it's glued in.
I did untick/disable google updater. I do use the toolbar though.
I'll give it another go though.
I thought I had windows update on automatic - I get that yellow shield periodically and download the new malicious software removal tool and everything, so I had thought I was up to date, but I'll go to the website and check.
The physical memory total (I wrote down when I first booted up before anything was running) was 777644 and available was 469604.0 -
bonjour and google update should say disabled when you run services.msc
http://www.groovypost.com/howto/groovytip/what-is-mdnsresponder-exe-and-why-is-it-running/
if you run minimonitor at startup, you should get a green square icon near the clock with a percentage in it, when that approaches 100% (it will turn red), multitasking will start to slow down (closing and reopening firefox tabs will free some memory if that ever happens, firefox is a little greedy with ram).
Also make sure you have changed the schedule (In windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 5 minutes, then ok, ok.)
As it is at the moment, it should be multitasking speedily?!!

Brilliant! I had mini monitor but not set to run at startup - changed that. Currently showing 32% (was 15% before I loaded FireFox)
I got Service Pack 3 - took *ages* (hence delay in getting back to you).
Yes I have changed the schedule, and got rid of Bonjour and Google Updater.
And that's it - done - immediate (after reboot) improvement, and yes, multitasking seems better too. (ask me again once I have GIMP and iTunes and FireFox going all at the same time...)
Can't thank you enough. Saved me some cash! :T0 -
how do you backup, which software+hardware?
avoid too many firefox plugins, all uses ram up!!

I make backups onto cds (as I have hundreds of them) of my documents and photos. I email myself my ongoing writing projects to two different webmails. And my brother recently bought an external harddrive so last week I did a full backup - not sure of the technical description, I used the windows software to make a shadow or image of my entire laptop. I have a second laptop, very ancient, which doesn't connect to the net and has just Open Source software on it, and I have stuff on there too.
I know I should get myself an external HD of my own and backup weekly... it's on the list of things to do. However, the stuff I would hate to lose - docs and photos - is saved on discs (and a few flash drives scattered around too).0
