I'm running firefox, and watching iPlayer right now, AVG running daily scan, and FileZilla deleting files from a server for me.

you didn't follow it fully, suggest you try it, the only thing stopping fluid multitasking is ram and commit charge, assuming you don't max out the cpu with iplayer hd.

I already use ccleaner and malwarebytes - I took your advice on ctfom and startuplite - in fact, the *only* thing I didn't do on that list was go from AVG to Avast. Is there really such a difference? Before i go ahead, what's the issue with AVG? It's been ok with me (once I uninstalled Link Scanner)

It's not as good, it's slower, it uses more ram (which is what makes your machine slow when multitasking)

If you close everything down, and your commit charge is >150MB, then there is scope for improvement.
