best of these 3 CPU?

I've been trying to compare on passmark but I am bogged down! I'm looking at buying a £300 laptop and three have caught my eye.

My processor choice is:

Intel Celeron Dual Core
AMD Athlon II
INtel Pentium Dual Core

I have been googling and there are some negative reviews on the Celeron. Will they make any substantial difference? The three laptops differ in price by about £20, with the Celeron being the most pricey. All three have 320GB HD and 3GB memory, and 3 USBs. Otherwise they just differ in brand and software loaded.

Thanks for any insight...

Can you be any more specific with the exact model? The pentium dual core probably the fastest, then the athlon x2 and celeron about equal, but depends on model. If its just web browsing and office stuff then I doubt you'd notice any difference between them speed wise.
The intel ones likely to come with the 4500MHD, or worse the plain 4500 with no built in hd acceleration. The athlon will have either the 3200/4200 which is a bit better, esp if you want to watch HD video or attempt a bit of light 3d gaming and probably had hdmi too. If none of that interest you, go for the nicest looking or one with best keyboard and screen.

Is there something wrong with your current laptop?

  • Ah bless you, thanks.

Well they are three laptops on Tesco: a Samsung RV510 (Interl Celeron), an Acer A5551 (AMD Athlon) and Dell Inspiron 1545 (Intel Pentium).

I don't do any gaming but I do work with digital images from my camera, editing in GIMP. I do a lot of file transfers so need storage (I maintain an online database and am forever FTP'ing things around). I'm currently on an ancient Medion I got from Woolworths; I did upgrade the memory a few years ago, but frankly it is struggling now.

I was inclining towards the Pentium... the link is here: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-1835.aspx

It's ancient and slowed to a crawl in spite of me tweaking and upgrading. It must be 6 years old at least. Not to mention the bits of food lodged in the keyboard...

I did that last week - and yes, it really did speed everything up! I was very impressed. However, running on XP version 2002, with 720MB RAM and a 1.7 Intel Pentium processor, I can't multitask like I want to. When I saw the speed of my dad's new laptop I went green with envy. I want to keep this old one, though, and have a play with any more upgrades - I don't know what I'm doing though, so don't want to risk learning the hard way without a replacement.

Aye that toshiba is tempting and I looked at it earlier - only 2 usbs put me off, as I tend to plug in my keyboard, and a pentablet, and a flash drive. Hmmm. Too many choices!

    USB ports wouldnt worry me
a little usb hub with short cable covers that

it does 'only' have 2gb of DDR3 ram
however it seems its one stick of 2GB leaving one DIMM slot free
so an easy upgrade to 4gb

    Im a desktop man myself
the laptop is for back up and when i need a computer out and about
at home its the PC every time

Doh. Hadn't thought of a usb hub.

I don't have a desktop - I'm generally on the move. One day I'll get one but for now, it'll be laptop. It gets a lot of use too.
