@ Fay - I sow my toms in a 250g mushroom tray (approx 40 - 50 a tray), and then !!!!! them into small pots when the first true leaves show.
They were sown into multipurpose compost rather than seed compost.
Just give them lots of light, mine are in the porch - the daytime temp can get into the 30's, whereas night time at the mo can be down to 5C.
The best tools for pricking out are a plastic fork, spoon and knife - the sort you get on airlines.
Mine took 9 days to show this year, whereas last year they were up within 5 - 7 days.0 -
Today I planted 2 of the Siberian tomato seeds, will let you know I get on with them.

            All planted valentines day:-
I'm over the moon as my alpine strawberry seeds are at the weeny 2 leaf stage. I've never done strawberries from seed so am made up.
Sadly my yellow strawberries and Kiwi show no signs of life.
Chillis and basil ready to take out of the propogator and pot onto a sunny window sill as are my Roma plum tomatoes & marigolds.
Oddly nothing from my sweet peas so think I may have had a dud batch and got a new packet from nottcutts to have another go. Normally these grow themselves.0 -
Got some Seeds sown Friday, Aubergine, chilli, peppers, early peas, nasturtium, beefsteak tomato etc etc. Going to sow some Parsnips and broad beans up at the Allotment this week and then next week I'll think about March sowings.;)"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

            Hello
Can I join here please? First question is where to find cheap compost for all the seed sowing. Everywhere I read on the net says 'new compost' for tomatoes so now I'm worried that the remnants from last yar won't be good for anything except soil conditioning. Also are xhillis worth trying with no greenhouse - never done them before but would like to give them a go.
Last question tonight - does anyone think those very cheap plastic growing houses (dont really qualify as greenhouses) are worth the £20 they seem to be around here. Will they bring on things faster or are they too insubstantial?debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -

Hi tugrin and welcome, you'll soon be hooked like the rest of us.;) I don't usually buy any fancy Compost, just buy what ever is on offer, got some last week from H0mebase, buy 3 bags get 1 free, they were 60litre bags and I think they were £5.99 each. I never re-use Compost the following year, any "spent" compost I just spread over the Garden beds. Can't answer your question about xhillis but can answer about the growing houses. I bought one last year, weighted it down with slabs after reading on here that they blow over easily and it still got blown over!! After the third time of weighing it down again and trying to repair the rips I just gave up with it.
Good luck everyone, bit drizzly today, think it may be a day to get some Housework done instead.:)"WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

We had frost tonight!!!! I woke to find my car white. I have some seedlings in the Wilko's greenhouse thingy, and went to check before rushing to work. They seemed ok. It wasn't a deep frost, but a bit, and it seems that the greenhouse saved the plants (fingers crossed).
Also, on Saturday I have sown yet another lot of aubergines (6), artichokes (6) - will try, and probably will buy some plants later on as well, spinach and leeks.
And we had a go at constructing our first raised bed - haven't finished yet, but it is almost in place - need to hammer it in a bit more and put the screws in. And after this - there another 5 to make!!!!!! Might need to get more men-power, as just me and OH, it took us 2 hours to get to the stage where we are with the first on, and I have already screwed 4 of the boards to the posts on Friday (I am making them 2 planks high). They are too heavy for me to handle on my own (the long side is 2.4m long, and each plank is 15cm high by 5cm wide), so we can only do this during the weekend.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -

One answer might be a miniature variety that's both good eating and ornamental so it can grace any sunny windowsill. I grow 'Pretty in Purple" bushing at less than a foot high with purple leaves and tiny but fiery multicoloured fruits. It might even live outdoors in summer.
It's theoretically perennial but I always forget to bring mine indoors in time!0 -
Anyone ever grown Tomatillos before? I've put some in the propagator and they have shot but have gone very leggy. Still only seedling leaves on them. I've fished them out and stuck them in pots on the windowledge but will they be OK?
My chillis and peppers seem to be performing properly though! All growing nicely in the propagator and I've just bought a B&M four shelf tardis as their new home for 9.99 which is frankly a bargain!!!Well behaved women rarely make history.0
