Microsoft cold calling

Just had a telephone call from a guy saying he was from the technical department of my computer! Said I had sent a report and he said I had a wireless connection which was causing my computer to run slowly and I had too many files and folders on my computer or words to that effect. He kept saying "is that correct Madam". I asked him what company he was calling from and he said Microsoft. I told him he was too technical for me and put the phone down.

I don't remember sending a report but have had a problem with my internet being slow at responding.

I must admit I am not very technical when it comes to computers but have Norton and firewalls installed and I do have a lot of old stuff on my computer which I need to delete.

Anyone else had a call like this please?

    **It's a scam**

They ask you to go to a "remote access" website and get you to install software that let's them take over the PC, then they can install viruses and/or steal your info/passwords...

There's been a lot of this happening over the past couple of years...

If the call again "hang up"...

Microsoft *never* call home customers out of the blue - as the previous poster said, it's simply a scam.
  • Thanks. I thought it must be as it seemed so strange.

Microsoft go out of their way to avoid having to speak to home users. If you bought your PC with Windows pre-installed, you will have "For technical support, contact the manufacturer of your PC" printed on the CD and/or manual.

Given that there is absolutely no way they will be pro-actively calling you trying to help.

Someone should set up a league table up of how long a scammer can be kept on the phone for :rotfl:
