I bought some plates, they are supposed to be legal but only have the registration number on (centred), nothing else, no makers mark, etc.

Are they legal?

They have to have the postcode and name of the company that made the plates.

    No, not road legal.

" The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:
The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier (The company that made the plate)
Name and postcode of the supplying outlet.

    Other options:
    A non-reflective border
    Euro-symbol with national identification letters
    "

They should be legal if they agree with above.

By centred, does this mean that the spacing is wrong?

I bought a set of plates with the new style font online, no postcode or anything else other than the reg on them. I had no problems.

They do not comply, so they are not road legal, see my post further up the page.

Stick em on, you MIGHT get trouble with the MOT, but as long as they're not blatantly illegal the Police won't bother.

Look how many "prestige" motors are around with blatantly illegal plates, they never seem to get caught....

Keep a set of normal plates and replace them for the MOT if they get funny about it.

I have to say im very much against plates with wrong spacing, or strange fonts.

It shouldn't be an issue if the main points are met, being Font, Size, Spacing. Personally I wouldn't worry if you meet these.

It is mainly so that number plates can be read by the police ANPR.

According to the DVLA, it doesn't actually appear to be an offence to not meet the British Standard anyway, ie having the postcode etc of supplier.

    "Offences
It is an offence to alter, rearrange or misrepresent letters or numbers in order to form names or words or in such a way that
makes it difficult to read the registration number. Characters must not be moved from one block to the other e.g. AB51 DVL
must not be displayed as AB5 1DVL or AB 51DVL. Vehicles with illegally displayed number plates may FAIL the MoT
test. The police can also issue fixed penalty fines for illegally displayed number plates. Offenders are liable to a MAXIMUM
FINE of £1,000 and in some cases the mark may be withdrawn."

They DID not comply. I sold the car to a German buyer last year.

I had the car for 4 years, and didn't have any issues with the plates.
