Avast is the current flavour of the month for free anti virus, and with the recent extras added onto avast 6 (free of course) should make it better, although as ever also make sure you have malwarebytes anti-malware installed and do regular manual scans with it (the free version is a ondemand scanner only with no real time scanning) other than that have windows set to download and install updates automatically and use some common sense when browsing and you should be fine as far as security is concerned

I use microsoft security essentials - its free and fautless in my opinion. Made by microsoft to protect the microsoft OS... If any knows how the OS needs protecting, it must be the creator you would think :)

although by that logic the question should surely be asked about why they hadnt made it more secure in the first place - although please do not take this as a bad point against Microsoft security essentials as it is one of the better free anti virus programs (although in my mind not as good as avast or avira)

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

By "usual crap" I meant Malwarebytes, and all the usual malware/spyware killers.
Quick question, can I still use things like Combofix for installing the recovery console or is that no longer needed?

    Hi all

Thought I'd resurrect this thread rather than startiong a new one.
On the new PC (I built it using recommendations from this thread), something funky's going on.
When I press the power button on the front of the case, the blue light comes on for maybe a second and the fans (all three) spin up and then everything dies again.

I've checked all the cables are in securely and that they're all in the right place.

    Anyone any ideas?

Has it ever booted or is this first attempt? Could be CPU not seated correctly.

It was the first time I've ever tried to boot it (haven't had a great deal of time for playing with it recently).
I do know the CPU "holder" went down flat and the cooler fit it nice and neatly though.
I'll check that tonight and get back to you.

If you immediately push the power button a second time does the same happen?
If no response then chances are something's shorted and the overload protection on the psu has kicked in.
    Move along, nothing to see.

If I push the power button immediately, I get nothing.
If I give it a few seconds and then try again I get the short burst from the fans.

I don't know what could have shorted as I used the little "lifters" under the motherboard to make sure it's not touching the case. The only thing I can think of is where all the USB, etc ports come through the back of the case as that needed a bit of jiggling to get into place.

    Hi all

I've found out what the problem is on my machine, there's no power to the mainboard.
It looks like I'm missing a 4-port connector from the PSU.
I do have an 8-port that splits into 2 4's and one half will fit into the port.
Can I use that or would I be better getting an adaptor (molex to 4 port)?

Use the half that fits. Don't need anything else. It supplies the cpu.

    Thanks for that.
Just tried it and mnaged to install Windows as well.
I've partitioned it so if I need to burn it, I can just reinstall OS/programs without losing data (I hope I've done it right).
