Skoda Octavia.
It has the same chassis as the A4
Its the same engine as the A4
Its the same gearbox as the A4
Its even more reliable than the A4
Its a lot cheaper.
12k would buy you a really well specced 3 year old low mileage model with leather, heated seats, probably could even get yourself a diesel with a DSG gearbox for that kind of money.
For 12k you could also get a top spec 3 year old Mondeo with slightly less miles. Other options might be the Insignia which is a bit of a marmite car but you get a lot for your money for 12k.
I thought the Octavia was based on the same platform as the A3, Toledo, Golf and old Audi TT, not the A4, as the previous A4 is now rebadged in the Seat Exeo which is an awful lot bigger than a Golf.
I agree with your point about the Octavia estate though, especially with the 140 diesel lump and DSG box, especially if you get it remapped to 170bhp.
A well specced Octavia should be available for the OP's budget.0 -

What about a Rover 75 with a revvy k series engine?0 -
Citroen C5 estate.
According to Warranty Direct, it's right up there in the reliability stakes: http://www.reliabilityindex.com/top-100
And you can get one with air suspension. A godsend considering the state of roads these days.0 -

I quite like these.. I've been looking at 06ish ones for the GF. HDis as a VTR Estate.....
Air Suspenion? Arent they all Hydraulic anyway?
£12k would get a 58/59plate VTR.
Only thing that would put me off spending 12k on a C5 is depreciation...
Spending your money I'd go C5 my Money and I'd come back with slightly older A6 Avant S-line...:D0 -

That was over 9 years ago.
Has been totally reliable and not had an ounce of trouble with it.
We've a trailer tent, 2 kids and 2 Leonbergers !
