Ideas for estate car please!

Hi All,

Me and the OH are trading in both our cars and are getting an estate (3 big dogs and a baby!)

We have roughly 12,000 to spend and I would like some recommendations please!

I was thinking Audi A4, Ford Mondeo, Mazda ?, don't want a Peugeot or Renault after bad experiences!

Any suggestions? I would like quite a good spec, leather seats are a must with the dog hairs and baby sick! Obviously it won't be new at that price, anybody got the cars above, or can recommend another estate that I might not have considered?

Thanks
Graham

Audi A4s are not especially roomy. I'd recommend a Mondeo, get yourself a nice diesel in a good spec. I've had a MK3 for a couple of years and it is a decent car, very roomy and nice to drive. The Mazda 6 is essentially a Mondeo, as I understand it.

I do like the look of the A4, but haven't had a good look inside yet! Not sure about getting a diesel, we don't do that many miles each year as I commute on the train to work. I suppose I can go for the petrol Mondeo, are these as good as the diesel?

    Skoda Octavia.

It has the same chassis as the A4
Its the same engine as the A4
Its the same gearbox as the A4
Its even more reliable than the A4

    Its a lot cheaper.

12k would buy you a really well specced 3 year old low mileage model with leather, heated seats, probably could even get yourself a diesel with a DSG gearbox for that kind of money.

For 12k you could also get a top spec 3 year old Mondeo with slightly less miles. Other options might be the Insignia which is a bit of a marmite car but you get a lot for your money for 12k.

Chrysler 300C Touring? All the toys as standard and lots, and lots, of room.

I find the Octavia roomier than the A4 as well, although I much prefer the interior on the A4, if that is important to you.

The Octavia's chassic is based on the Golf like many other models such as TT, A3, Altea, Tiguan, Leon etc. The A4 is on a different chassis.

My recommendation would be the Mondeo which has an absolutely massive interior and boot.

My brother is a Taxi driver (owner), he had three Mondeo's, one after another, and was a committed fan. But his latest is a Skoda Octavia and he loves it, he say's it is far superior than the Mondeo's and he hasn't had as many problems (high mileage related) as he did with the Fords.
He says he will never go back to the Fords and I never thought I'd here him praising a 'Skoda', and now there are more Skoda's on the fleet than Mondeo's.
It's a Laurent & clemen (I think that's how you spell it) so it has all the toys and full leather (handy in a taxi). If you can get your head round the 'badge' it may be worth a look.

That is a beast of a car, I can't decide if I like it or not!

    VW Passat ?

I had thought about the Passat, but I'm just not that keen on them, they just look boring to me! I might have to think about the Skoda, there is one across the road and its a lovely looking car.

My dream estate would of course be the Audi RS6, but my budget just doesn't stretch that far! :D
