Does anyone know where's the cheapest place to buy Mara des Bois strawberry plants? Best I can find at the moment is 15 plants for £11.90 from Mr !!!!!!!!!!! but this will be £15.85 with delivery which is a bit too much...

Alternatively, they've got Royal Sovereign 12 for £2.95 which is a bargain! What is this variety like for taste? I did buy some Honeyoye from Wilkinsons but have since read bad things about this variety and don't want to be disappointed. Luckily I only bought 3 of these

Because people are afraid of being called a spammer. On all forums, this included, there are those who like to indulge in a bit of bullying.

I looked on the Mr Fothergill website and they have Royal Sovereign at 12.95 but also at £2.95. It looks like a glitch but..........

Royal Sovereign is a variety that is over 100 years old and was once highly prized.
However it slowly lost its vigour, becoming highly succeptable to disease. coupled with its relatively low yields it was abandoned as a commercial crop, and by most gardeners.

Recently some mad scientists, meddling with forces they don`t understand, have bred a disease resistant strain.

Royal Sovereign is an early mid variety, with quality flavour, but not so high yields.

Mara Des Bois is about ten years old (i think) and boasts medium sized fruits alongside the explosive aromas of the woodland strawberry. It is still under patent which means that anyone who propogates it (ie grows plants from runners and seeds), has to pay royalties. Thats why they are dear, and you wont find them in the bargain plant suppliers or ebay etc.

If you want a spread of strawberry crops you could try

    1. Gariguette. Very early cropper, eagerly awaited by the french in early summer. until Mara, the top chefs choice.
    2. Royal Sovereign, early mid cropper
    3. Cambridge Favourite. Good all rounder and available cheaply if you buy in bulk from eg parkers. mid cropper.
    4. Mara de Bois, produces 2 sometimes 3, flushes until around oct/nov depending on weather.

With this plan you would have strawbs from june until maybe november, though of course heaviest crops will be in june july, unless you can plant up loads of runners from Mara for the coming years.

I will now test out if its a glitch.................................

 That must be some size of a garden! Do you keep all the produce yourself or have you sold any on at all?

There must be a right lot of runners off those plants every year!
