    Thinking of you Betty !

I'm trying to work out how much I will get each month when I go on mat leave. After the first 6 weeks, I go onto the SMP :(

    Thats about £135 a week x 4 = £540 - Taxed 20% = £432
Do I have NI deducted from this as well? If so does anyone know what % that is?

    Then add CB = £80

I estimate I will be getting about £510 each month
Does this sound right to you?

You won't pay tax or NI on this amount as you can earn £181 a week tax free. You will likely get a small refund weekly for a while. You can't claim any benefits (CB or tax credits) till your baby is born.

When I saw deductions I wasn't paying tax or NI it is internal deductions for my pension and other things through work.

The child benefit is applied for once baby is born (you can't apply before). Following the birth, the hospital will supply you with CB forms. Tax credits I have no idea about as they don't apply to me.

As for maternity pay - don't really have a clue! I knew it was £128 a week but didn't really consider whether it was taxable. I thought one would get £9440 tax free so with maternity earnings being less than that in a year it wouldn't be taxed. Totally perplexed about this though as I know tax year runs from April - April so since April I've been paying tax and obviously earning above £9440! Totally totally confused but either way I can still manage.

I'm also going to use my 10 KIT days to go to work once a month (aside from 2 months immediately prior to birth when I won't) so I'm lucky enough to get a days pay for them and I get full pay for 3 months too so it's not amazing to be losing the salary I've grown accustomed to but I think I'll get by. I'm not particularly saving much though. Only about a £1000 prior to baby arriving because I have literally planned to buy everything I can think of that baby will need in that first year...highchairs, toddler cups, weaning sets, safety gates, next stage car seat - you name it I'm trying to cover it!

I'm sure 3 years ago my SMP wasn't taxed but I am either on or below the threshold. SMP actually works out similar to what I earn now so won't make a massive difference, its DH going on 2 weeks paternity leave that is worrying me as I think he only gets basic like me so he will have an income drop and we will probably struggle with the rent/ etc. I keep nagging him to try save 1 months salary so at least we know we are covered!

Hello there - thanks for all the messages, I really appreciate it.

Well last night I started to get contractions so was moved back down to delivery where they were 5 minutes apart and I was given diamorphine and gas and air. Horrible time as I really thought it was game over as they won't resuscitate at 22w.

In the morning I was advised to lie on my left side and contractions suddenly stopped! I've only had 3-4 since 8am :)

However I had a scan which showed that baby 1 is literally hanging through my cervix, still in the sac, which is causing bleeding and a lot of downward pressure. The dr said in her experience cases like this deliver within one week, which won't take us up to the 24 viability point...

So I'm just hanging on in delivery, taking one day at a time and on complete bed rest, hoping for the best.

Thanks for all your concern :)

Have been thinking of you all of today Betty. I know that sounds ridiculous as you're a total stranger but I just can't imagine how you must be feeling.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you all and hope that they stay put until atleast 24 weeks. Huge hugs at what must be a horrendously difficult time.
