If you breastfeed Mrs Bunny they suggest no bottles or dummies for 6 weeks as it can cause nipple confusion. By the time she was 6 weeks old my DD wouldn't take a dummy, which was frustrating when she just wanted to be at the breast all the time but is good now she's nearly 2 as she doesn't need to be weaned off it!
In the USA they give "pacificers" on the ward as a matter of routine due to research which shows they slightly reduce the risk of SIDS. However, breastfeeding also reduces the risk of SIDS so we didn't want to jeopardize that. It is a very personal decision but for the sake of £2 it may be worth having some in the house to try if LO is screaming for apparently no reason at 5am... Sometimes the feeling that you're trying something, anything!!!, helps psychologically.
Regarding equipment - Ebay, Ebay, Ebay! The only things which must be bought new are car seats and mattresses for safety reasons. I bought DD a bundle of clothes from Gumtree for £25 and hasn't need anything else other than a coat and a party dress for a wedding we went to since February! Also, we tried to remember that if there is anything you're desperate for, order it online on express delivery or pop to a 24 hour Tesco and you've got it by the next day.
Hope you all had a lovely weekend xxxx0 -
My nephew is 2 and never had a dummy, that inspires me! Then again, he has a beautiful room full of mamas and papas furniture which he's never spent the night in, he's slept every night with my bro and his wife, much to their despair!0

thanks mincepiemonster.....I am planning on breastfeeding and I am sure DH would be the first to reach for the dummy to calm a crying baby as he has the patience of a wasp! Think I will get a couple in for those nights you described but not to use all the time.
I agree with ebay.....ive got quite a few things already, and car boot sales. The only things I want to buy new are pram, car seat and mattress and a few clothes. Pram - because I want to actually go into a shop and try the pram out and actually buy something new (plus mum will not allow me to have 2nd pram, shes stop nagging me now about everything else!), car seat and mattresses due to safety.
I won a lovely bedding set mamas and papas, duvet, sheet, cot bumper, light shade, mobile, cushion, changing matt, teddy, and couple of other things all the same 'characters' for £20, must of been at least £150+ new. Also got a john Lewis mosses basket for £5 - bargain and its as good as new. Picked up some lovely sleeping /gro bags from a car boot 50p each, m&s and after a wash they look even better! I have picked up a few new 'new born baby' things / 0-3 months babygrows that were in the sale in Matalan to see me through the first week too.
Those baby lists - I am sure my mum has them printed out....she has a baby box for me.....it must be full already as everytime I speak to hear she has bought something else! First grandchild so I will let her off! Least it saves me money!!Proud mummy to an amazing 8 year old!0 -

Here is a revised list:
Somewhere for the baby to sleep, and bedding for that somewhere
A way to feed the baby
Something to catch wees and poos
A way to transport the baby, either a sling or a pushchair, and a car seat if you have a car
Things for the baby to wear
Things for the baby to look at or play with
I had good fun looking at the list, though!0 -
My nephew is 2 and never had a dummy, that inspires me! Then again, he has a beautiful room full of mamas and papas furniture which he's never spent the night in, he's slept every night with my bro and his wife, much to their despair!
oh no Jox! I couldn't have that. DH wants our baby to go in their own room straight away but ive said no the first few months in our room then move once they are too big for the mosses basket.Proud mummy to an amazing 8 year old!0 -
Evening all!
I had a mini melt down yesterday and hubby took me to Ikea to buy the mattress and I ordered the car seat remaining nappies online so I now have everything that I will need for the baby :j This is our second and I have been reasonably ruthless in what I have bought. Just to add to the lists here is mine, many things are from Ebay, Gumtree or have been given as gifts. Things bought new were on sale or offer:
For Baby
Cot and mattress
Bedding
Stretchy sling
Becco baby carrier
Cot top changing mat
Pram
Car seat
Co sleeper crib (hired)
Reusable Nappies and bucket
Reusable wipes
Cloths
Bibs
We have also ben given loads of clothes by friends and I think my mum has a selection of fun things waiting in the wings. I have also picked up some bits and pieces for me like Lansinoh and other post baby essentials.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
LannieDuck wrote: »Sml - I agree almost 100% with your adapted list.
I would also cross out baby mits - mothercare babygros come with integral babymits that LO can't get off. An absolute lifesaver if your baby has razor sharp nails like mine did!
I would put nipplecream (Lansinoh) as an essential if you're BFing, if only needed for the first 2 weeks or so.
You will def need a non-slip bathmat, but not for some months.
And it's not an 'essential', but we wouldn't have been without out white noise machine. I bought a little 'gift' for DD1 (like a PP I didn't just want to buy the boring stuff!) - a Prince Lionheart Slumberbear - and it comes with a noisebox thing. The white noise was amazing at sending her to sleep.
That sounds great as my friend used to sit with the hair dryer on for ages, but that of course meant she couldn't go back to bed! I read you can also get white noise phone apps but don't know how long the battery would last!0 -
Smlsave - we have a bare bottomed toddler running around just now. Unfortunately not much has landed in the potty
Faerie - Big hugs for the funeral. Hope you're ok or as ok as you can be x. Quads! Omg how do they cope. It would be cute to visit them but pretty hard to have them full time.
Lannieduck- OMG white noise is an essential!!Keeps you sane by hypnotising screaming babies :rotfl: in saying that its not essential to pay for it. If you are with your baby you can press repeat on the 10 min session on youtube Baby Got Colic. There are various ones but I found this one to be the best played at full volume.
I agree with Mincepiemonster, cellular blankets are the best. They may not be the prettiest but keep babies cool when needed and warm when needed as they find it difficult to regulate their own temp. Those and sleeping bags are recommended for safe sleeping. Cot bumpers can restrict the airflow around the baby and should be avoided. I didn't know that but a woman visited our baby group once and scared the sh*t out of us with loads of info on SIDS.0 -
DH wants our baby to go in their own room straight away but ive said no the first few months in our room then move once they are too big for the mosses basket.
Plus if you plan to breastfeed I suggest that your DH gets used to having baby in your room or are you planning to go into another room every 2hrs for 30mins+ to feed the baby?Tell your DH he's more than welcome to sleep on the sofa
Re dummy's. We had a selection bought for us but DS refused them. In hindsight I'm glad he did.Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck
